Ten Minutes

The Weather Channel being quite blunt about how bad the winter was becoming.

It's been a long winter. Terms like "polar vortex" and "Snowpocalypse" have entered the vernacular. The lucky of us merely looked out the window at all the ice. The less fortunate had walk miles to get home or to spend the night in it.

Normally, cooler weather means more wind but there have been few windy sessions this winter and those we did get demanded the stoutest of winter gear with temps no more than 40 F. The 90 liter board stayed dry almost all winter while the Formula board needed an oil change it got so many miles on it.

Late last fall, we include the current conditions from Hell, Norway on our front page as a bit of a joke. Was it really colder than Hell? Well, the joke was on us because while we were suffering through the coldest winter in a couple of decades, Europe was unseasonably warm. Hell was both warmer and windier than we were. We think it best at this point for the theologians amongst us to say what that means for life in Atlanta.

Recharging the Batteries

Here's a nice ten minute video that will remind you why you love windsurfing. Even if most of what you see is totally beyond your skill set, you will appreciate the feeling of carving, jumping and ripping. We suggest you view it full screen with the volume turned up (but probably not at the office unless everyone else is into electronic dance music, too).

Windsurfing 2013

Hatteras Spring 2014

Where do you go if you:

  • Want to get better at *surfing (wind, kite or just plain vanilla)?
  • Get dependable wind?
  • Do it on a reasonable budget that doesn't mean your kids will be eating ramen all summer to pay for your play time?
  • The answer: Hatteras (aka, the Outer Banks. Also includes Avon, Nags Head, Rodanthe, Salvo, etc.)

But organizing your own trip can be daunting. What if someone who has gone before is organizing a trip? How about if that person was super nice Barrett Walker (bpw on the forums)? You are in luck.

35th Annual Fall Classic Oct. 18-20

Sponsors of the 35th Annual Fall Classic

We are proud to announce the 35th Annual Fall Classic. (If you want to skip to the Notice of Race, here it is.) This is the longest running windsurfing race in the United States. It's also a lot of fun even if you don't race. For some, it's about the thrill of the race. For others, it's about spending a weekend with a bunch of really nice folks, hanging out on one of the prettiest spots in North Georgia - the sunsets are always killer - great food, drink and more. You don't have to be a racer, or even windsurfer, to have fun. But you do have to be there.

Chris Voith, who works tirelessly each year to put this on, always has something fun planned for Saturday evening. Last year, it was a fireworks display that embodied that great American ideal: excess. It was big, it was huge, it was loud. And, it was wonderfully synchronized to music.

But what could Chris do this year to top that? How about... get this.... with the help of Ezzy and Windsense, we give away a brand new Ezzy 7.5 sail? We could have cheaped out and done a budget brand sail or a measly 3.5 that you want to use but really won't ever get wet. Nope and nope. We went full in on probably the most used size in Atlanta. A 7.5 will cover you for 60-70% of Atlanta windsurfing even if you thought you wanted to rig a 6.5 - this is an Ezzy after all. It will do that.

Make plans. Be there. No excuses. Even if you don't win a sail (but you know it has your name on it), it is always a fun time whether you can manage to make a whole weekend out of it or just part of the time.

    Opening Day Soiree Sept. 14

Chris Voith has been kind enough to invite the local *surfing (wind, kite, etc) to the Lake Lanier Sailing Club beach this Saturday, Sept. 14 for an informal get together honoring the beginning of the fall/winter/spring sailing season, . We'll all be there wind or no wind. If it's windy, we'll go get wet. If not, we'll tell stories and consume food and beverages.

As September is this is our equivalent to throwing out the opening pitch for the season.
