About the Atlanta Boardsailing Club

Who we are

We are a community of windsport enthusiasts. While windsurfing tends to be the primary topic of conversation, we love any kind of wind propelled sports including windfoiling, kitesurfing, kitefoiling, catamarans, dinghies, larger sailboats and even kite buggies and windskating. Many of us do a variety of these. We love it all and invite conversation on any of it, anything related to it and even other things you think the community would find interesting.

Our history

The Atlanta Boardsailing Club was organized in 1978 and is one of the oldest in the country. We have 'boardsailing' instead of windsurfing in our name because back at the club's origination, Windsurfer and Windsurfing were still trademarks of company that produced the original Windsurfer. Over the years, we've evolved into an on line community, gathering on our forum when we aren't on the water. Hang out with us here, at a local beach or on a club trip. A lot of us having been doing this a long time but none of us have forgotten what it was like starting off. There is no attitude, here. We're happy to share information and tips and love to see new faces in the neighborhood.

Events

There are two main events on our annual calendar that you are always welcome to, whether you are new or experienced:

  • Our annual Fall Classic regatta, the nation's longest running windsurfing event, is held each October on Lake Lanier
  • Our Holiday Party is held each December is a great opportunity to catch up with friends, meet new people and mark the beginning of the deep winter windsurfing season.

US Windsurfing

We are a member of US Windsurfing our national organization. Club members receive a discount on their US Windsurfing membership.

How hard is it?

If you haven't windsurfed in a long time or ever, rest assured, it's a lot easier than it was in the old days. Lightwind and beginner boards are much more stable and the sails much easier to handle. Also, manufacturers have developed rigs for women and children so you don't have to be Mr. Muscles to windsurf. Kids as young as 6 or 7 (or even younger) can windsurf with the proper equipment.
