Kenny Aaronson , Chuck Leavell and Michael Shrieve were the “house band” for several others on the bill, including Neil Schon w Jonathan Cain, Tony Iommi and Lita Ford, David Gilmour (got to stand 5 feet from him during his sound check, as he was just “noodling” for 30 minutes while the crew chased down a nasty ground hum ....THAT WAS AMAZING....), and a few others I can’t remember.

I was there because Link Wray was also on the bill that night, and my friend Perry Margouleff (who was attempting to resurrect Link’s career) had asked me to come along to kinda act as roadie/tech and also to supply an amp for Link. The gloss-white Marshall half-stack that can be seen on stage right is the amp I indeed supplied.

Anyway, back to Dickey and Brian:

The gig was a bit chaotic from the start, numerous technical delays and there was plenty of time to hang out and drink coffee in the Green Room that morning. When Dickey Betts walked in and pulls out the gold top with the Indian-bead strap and began to warmup (it was November and quite cold) I was elated to observe a legend in fine form, but managed to remain cool from a few feet away, just absorbing his in-amplified brilliance. I was surprised when not long after, Brian Setzer walked in and the two of them exchanged overjoyed greetings, clearly indicating to me that they were friends previously and beyond thrilled to see each other. I would not have put the two of them together, but it was apparent that they had some fond history together, as well as mutual admiration.

Conversation then ensued whereby they discussed not only the initial idea of playing something together (I was led to believe they were booked as separate acts for the shoot, but who knows...) but also, what song they might do.

Brian suggested the tune and proceeded to show it to Dickey, who picked up the changes almost immediately. On the second run through (they weren’t even using amps...) the harmony parts you hear at the end sprang to life. They made it look so easy, my barely 21 year-old self was mesmerised, and completely in awe.

A couple hours later they did it at soundcheck (essentially flawless) and then nailed it as you see in this wonderful clip.

I had long held deep respect for both within their known bodies of work, but that morphed into sheer reverence after witnessing their impromptu, ad-hoc collaboration that day.

The footage for the other acts on the bill is out there, some of which (but not all) is worth the time to watch.

Link’s performance of “Rumble” is worth it (he demanded that he be able to use the rhythm section of Anton Figg and Keith Lentin , so Link was the only act in the bill not to use Kenny and Michael) and David Gilmour’s performance is great, highly recommended if you come across it.

So there ya go, some more background to what would seem like an usual pairing from an unusual gig.

Was completely looking for some other songs on youtube in a different decade and genre and came across this album. It's a lovely way to spend some time while driving on a road trip or sipping a favorite beverage. Echoes of a lot of things to come from Santana to George Benson.

Sadly the quote was from a Youtube comment. I didn't get to see them. Did see REM do a New Year's Eve Party in Decatur back then so there's something... I have a limited live music resume so I cling to my small victories like a kid with a soccer participation trophy.

Did see Brian Setzer and his orchestra a couple of years ago. He still slays on the guitar.
