Windsurfing Report Superbowl Sunday

Depite a high of only 40F, the sailing at Van Pugh was good. With the wind from the West and full sun, the rigging area was in a wind shadow and reasonably warm. The wind was a steady 20+ out on the Lake. Gene, Randy, and I were the only ones that got out on the water.

Augusta

Managed to make the trip to Augusta on Saturday and was not disappointed. 56 degrees and windy. Sailed 5.8 with the old 69 liter mistral. Wind looked as if it was picking up as I left at 2:30. Many sailors out on 4.7. Thanks to Chuck, Rich and Chris who made me feel welcome on their turf. The drive is long, but there was no wind shadow and much warmer weather. I would make the trip again if I had the opportunity. Trey

Glad you made it Trey! Unfortunately the wind never really cranked like I thought it would, but Elizabeth and I still got a solid couple of hours on the 4.7. Man it looked coooold over at Lanier. We had a sunny 62 degrees on Saturday -- no gloves or hoods needed!

We have a huge lake with only a few sailors, so we love the company.

Nitro (or others): Where do you sail from on NW wind on Clark Hill Lake? I'd like to do a road trip next time it's windy and cold.

Chuck, check out this link from the whitecap windsurfing site

For any wind with west in it, we go to Scott's Ferry. It is a long drive (about 2 hours from downtown Atlanta), but the last 2 or 3 really windy days have been significantly warmer. I have sailed 2 days with a 3.7 and one with a 4.7 over the last few weeks and have not needed gloves -- for January that is very sweet.

Thanks Nitro (is that you Chuck Hardin?) Any idea what your water temperature is? Lanier was about 50 on the weekend, however I suspect with this week being cold, it's going to drop.

Nope Chuck -- I am not the other Chuck. To come sail with THE Chuck Hardin is worth the drive alone though! He's a crazy wild man on the water. But whatever you do, don't let him talk you into sailing the tandem board with him!

I can only guess that the water temps are in the mid to upper 50s. We have had an extremely mild January so the water is much more comfortable than I can ever remember for this time of year. Of course one good ice storm and that can all change!

Looks like it's about 165 miles from my house to the launch at Scott's Ferry. Man, I'd hate to get skunked.
