windsurfing in maui?

Hi all,
I was wondering if anybody could tell me if it is a good idea to
take a trip to maui in the second week of may. You guys seem
to be the aged windsurfing veterans so surely you must know about
this stuff =P. I am just about to graduate georgia tech and have
some spare change to blow Blum 3

Does maui have good wind this time of the year? If so,
where is the best place to make travel arrangements?
Is there a best spot to go to? Where is a good cheap
place to stay? Is camping an option?

If maui isnt a good place this time of the year, what would
you recommend?

David,

Maui is a good bet this time of year. The I understand it is that the wind is more consistant in the summer months and large waves are common in the winter months. I went the first week of June and had little waves but average sail size was 4.5m. I sailed 4.0 one day, all day.

Call some of the local shops )windsurfing Maui, Hi-Tech, Hawaiin Island Surf and Sail etc.) and ask the locals what they think about sailing in May.

I stayed with two other people in a one bedroom condo right behind Mamma's Fish House next to Hookipa. $70 bucks a night.

We sailed mainly at Kanaha and was not dissapointed. When the wind has any North in it, go to Kihei. We did sail Hookipa but the locals and most of the pros showed up and made the small beach of Hookipa rather crowded.

Good luck whatever you decide, I am jealous. Hope this has been helpful.

I will be in Maui May 23 to June 8. There is some camping in the state parks but they are in Hana. Rent a minivan and sleep on a dirt road in it. Night time temps are 75 to 80. Wind should be good. Lately there has been an enormous amount of rain. There are no cheap places to stay in Maui. No motels etc. Everything is expensive.
