The weather.com forecast for Wed. is 10-20 from the ENE. Who's going to Van Pugh?

Tuesday was OK sailing at Van Pugh. I got out from 12:30 to 2:00PM. Wind was from the East & I was on a plane about half the time with an 8.3m & 129L board. The forecast was only 10-15, but the wind on the water was 10-20mph.

I am giving serious thought to going Wed am. If so, I would probably go very early (arrive around 8AM) and go to Tidwell. If anyone is definite about going to Vann's Tavern I'd definitely considering going there as well. (Depending on wind direction and strength.) Can't spend the whole day at the lake, so I don't really have time to go to Van Pugh.

A question for the weather gurus.

There have been several days when very little wind was forecast, than it picked up to around 15-20 during the middle of the day. By late afternoon it was back down. What causes this? Is there any way to know when it is going to happen?

One more question. Who do I have to buy a beer for to get that "newbie" label off of my posts?

Jeff,

First of all, most experienced windsurfers have been humbled enough times that they are afraid to say anything for sure about the wind. As soon as you think you know it all, you end up driving for 45 minutes to the lake and get skunked.

Lately we have been in a situaiton where the only way to find wind seems to be when it exceeds forecast. We used to think that wind never was as good as forecast, but lately the forecasters and models may have been too pessimistic. Best place to start looking is the "numeric MOS" under the "Weather" section of this web page. Weather.com also has hourly forecasts that are pretty good sometimes. For easterlies the rule is they are stronger in the morning, and often die by noon (really about 11 am). On cloudy days they will last longer. When all is said and done, its just guesswork, and lots of hoping. I've been out plenty of times when 15-20 turned out to be 4-8. Its been nice lately when some 5-10s have turned out to be 10-15.

BTW - just keep posting and the Newbie thing will disappear.

Tuesday evening at Vanns

I went up to Vanns this afternoon after work. Conditions were pretty good for a newbie, especially out in the channel. I would guess 10+ mph E/ENE, with a some gusts. More boat traffic than I would have expected. The wind picked up noticeably about 30 minutes before sunset and then calmed quickly at about 7:15.

I sailed for about 2 1/2 hours on the 6.6 and got in a lot of good practice. I was definitely underpowered, but I still don't have a harness and I can't hang on to the bigger sail for more than about 30 minutes. I'm getting good at derigging after dark, though.

That would be me. Something quality - Bass on draught, Asahi Dry, Sam Adams, most microbrewries.

Or, as Randy said.... (my way is easier Smile )

Thanks, Webguy. You do have good taste.

Do they not miss Randy at work or is he independently wealthy?

To answer Jeff's question of why we've had East wind for several days, there seems to be a persistent low south of Atlanta with a high pressure sustem to the North. Although the systems are weak, the result is a band of higher wind over our region as the high and low rotate in opposite directions.

I'm heading to Van Pugh and expect the best wind mid-day.

One of the great things about being totally useless is that people never miss you at work.

Actually, I've made my fortune on windsurfing gear arbitrage. I buy used sails and board here in Atlanta, where there is no market, and then sell them at Hatteras and the Gorge for a big profit. If you're interested, you can buy my book "How to Make an Abosulte Fortune in Windsurfing with NO MONEY DOWN" only four easy payments of $199.95.

Sailed Tidwell from 8:30 to 11. Was a solid 7.0 except for a brief lull around 10. Picked up, and by 11 I was faced with either rigging down, or heading home. Chose the latter, since I was afraid someone might miss me at work and I was already pretty worked.

Randy,
It sounds like you had a good day. I look forward to meeting such a smart man. I owe the webguy some beer; I'll just put you on my list.

I am going to try Van Pugh around five. I hope you left me some wind.

Jeffk, You may look forward to meeting Randy; you may look forward to meeting a smart man. However, you probably won't do both at the same time.

Actually, Randy is a very nice guy in a club of nice guys and gals. As for his liberal work schedule, apparently, when you are in the witness protection program, you have lots of spare time. Oops, I wasn't supposed to say that was I? My bad.
