Starboard's New Aluminum Mast Problem for Older Boards

Short version - don't count on being able to use the new Starboard aluminum mast with an older Starboard (and maybe any other brand) Go or Formula board. Can break the deep tuttle box.

Long version -

Probably won't affect anyone around here, but something to keep in mind.

Your point is well taken but I have a problem with that post.

He misunderstands the forces on a foil box and where they occur, the design intent of the Starboard race foils and why Starboard would have little to no incentive to have to design their cutting edge high performance foils to accommodate a 17 yr old freeride board. Especially for a 100kg guy on a board that's almost old enough to go to college. If he had simply said, "this is beyond the normal design parameters but I decided to try it and it didn't work", I'd be okay. But, to suggest that somehow Starboard fell short troubles me

There are plenty of alternatives to the Starboard for freeriding that have a plate or front lip for anyone curious but in the race world options are more limited: Loke, Zeeko, Iris Z and maybe Alpine are the ones that come to mind.

All very fair points, and I wasn't intending to endorse the poster or anything like that. It is a bit like complaining that a new App won't work on a Windows 95 computer. I know that starting out with an older Go or Formula board has been done by a lot us and there was (and still may be) a Go floating around here. So this was just to warn people to be aware of potential problem.

Didn't feel like you were and I absolutely agree with your point. And, your analogy is spot on. I deleted about six similar to yours as my post was whiny enough already. You, Randy, are a man of science. You aren't afraid to find the limits in destructive testing. Biggrin

I was just venting a bit. A couple of weeks ago, he was dismissing a lot of the conventional wisdom we offer to beginning foilers simply because few or none of the issues had bitten him yet. Now one of those bits bites him and it's Tiesda You's fault. Fool
