Shipping Boards

Does anyone have experience with shipping a board

What is the best method,,,cost being highly important of course, but also the board should make it to the end destination with a high probability of not having any additional holes in it.

Thanks in advance for suggestions...Marek

Marek,

I posted the same question this past January and got some good responses. Maybe William can help find it, because I was unable too (the archive says it's locked).

Another source is http://www.windsurfingclassifieds.com/
Look under "Help" then "FAQ", then #8.

Note that I didn't buy a board this winter because the shipping cost ($145 by trucking company from Emerald Isle, NC) would have exceeded the price of the board. US air would have been cheaper (~$50), but they refused to ship because we weren't doing enough business to warrent doing a security screening (a 9/11 result).

Try AAA Cooper Transportation (great company, cheap prices) and also check with Forward Air. A few examples of costs shipping from AL: California $100, Texas $60, Chicago $75. Also, e-mail Chuck Hardin at Whitecap Windsurfing, he can help with locations of terminals near Atlanta area.

Tips: Wrap very well in large bubble wrap and cover with cardboard (buy 4x8 sheets and cut them down). Use TONS of heavy duty packing tape.

Print out large shipping label and secure with packing tape and you're done (2 hours later)!

Good luck,

Brooks

Thanks for all the suggestions.

FYI, Airline Cargo (Delta, American etc) no longer accepts shipments from individuals. They will only work with you if you are a registered freight forwarder (post 9/11 reality). Too bad, because according to multiple sources this was the best way to ship.

AAA Cooper people are great, but their rates are only low for shipments to cities where they run their trucks, once they have to use another carrier the price goes way up.

So far Con Way seems to have the best rates at about $160 to $200 for shipments within about a 1000 miles from Atlanta. These rates are based on delivering the board to their terminal and the recipient picking the board from the destination terminal. Home pickup and delivery will add about $50-60.
