September Club meeting

Club meetings are scheduled for Wed, Sept 12 and Wed, Oct 10, (second Wednesdays.) Just a reminder while I'm thinking about it, as I will miss both of these meetings due to ROAD TRIPS!

hi gene, i just moved to chattanooga from hong kong. decent windsurfing there, just wondering if you ever traveled up to chattanooga and tried out the lakes here, like chickamauga? i am willing to drive down to lanier, and it seems you guys have a lot of experience on it, would appreciate any advice on either place. and i have all my own gear, so no rental info needed.

thanks in advance, rich

Hi Rich, welcome to Chattanooga. There are a handful of us that sail on Chickamauga. Conditions are similar to Atlanta, mostly gusty cold front sailing. On anything north or west we usually launch at the Chickamauga Dam boat ramp. South, s/w, s/e launch is Harrison Bay State Park. Northeast is usually Booker T Washington State park. Anything straight out of the east is usually too light. The best season for sailing starts right about now & runs through spring. Summer sailing usually requires the biggest sail you can handle. You'll need a good wetsuit or maybe a drysuit for winter. Some of our best days temps are in the 50's or 40's. Sounds cold but I wear a 4/3 wetsuit & I'm comfortable, & I hate cold weather. Let me know if I can help you with any more info. I'll look forward to seeing you on the water.

thanks for the great info rick, are you local to chatt or atlanta? i checked out chickamauga today and it seemed pretty good. i thought about launching from the swim area, it was blowing NE. my biggest sail is a 9.8m on a freeride board, and i think it would have been fine. is there any particular time of day that is better? i was there around 6:00pm and the wind was blowing steady. if i can swing it, i'm gonna try to make out there around 4:00pm tomorrow, sunday. look forward to hearing from you.

Anybody sail on Nickajack? Every time I drive over the bridge, it looks like it has potential.

Also, is it worth driving over to Scottsboro for the long fetches on NE?

Hey Rich, sorry about the late reply, I had login issues. Anyway, I'm local to Chattanooga. You just missed some sailors when you were at the dam. Don't launch at the swim area, there's stuff you have to get across that's there to keep the boaters out. Go around & launch at the boat ramp. It's pretty busy in the summer, but now that football season started it's not that busy. Looks like tomorrow might be decent around midday. Forecast is kind of iffy but I'm going to be too sick to work just in case. It'll be north so see you at the dam if you can make it. Webguy, I've never saled Nickajack but I've thought the same thing crossing that bridge. That's not far from Danny Johnson's neighborhood, he might know.

Hi Rick, thanks for the reply. That is great that you are local. I would love to find some guys I could launch with, nice to windsurf in numbers. Please email me at

and we can swap numbers. I work for myself so I have some flexibility. Thanks in advance, Rich
