the season has started!

Wow -- what an awesome day at Clark's Hill ! Overpowered 6.0 for several hours with sunshine and temps in the high 80s. After 3 months it was great to be back on the water. Any luck at Lanier?

I sailed about 1.5 hr on 6.4, which was about right. There were some holes and it was a bit ragged - but it was the best day in quite a while. I quit about 3 to dodge a nasty t-storm, however. It looked like it might have picked up again, after the rain cleared out, but I was gone by then.

At Van Pugh, while Randy sailed his 6.4 at Tidwell(?), a few sailors sailed the bigger stuff, then the storm hit, lots of rain and lightning, then not much wind, then the second shift arived, rigged big, then another storm came thru. After the second storm, the wind did come up and we sailed the bigger stuff.

I was at 2Mile, which is a perfect spot for SW.

Randy. I have never been at 2Mile.

On a SW wind direction, is 2Mile wind good from the get go, or you have to travel into the lake 100-200ft to catch the good stream of wind?

I have been to Van's tavern on SW and it is not really in a good orientation for SW. I assumed that 2Mile was kind of simillar to Van's Tavern given how close they are. Please let me know.

We went to Old Federal yesterday (kiters-5 in total), but the traffic from ATL was horrible. Departed by 4pm and arrived 5:40pm... Maybe 2Mile is a better alternative to Old Federal on a week day with SW wind, just due to the traffic jams in 285, then 85 north.

Any comment will appreciate.
Rgds,
Emilio.

Emilio,

I'm afraid SW winds at any location on Lanier may not be kite friendly, because they always are pretty ragged (with holes, lulls etc.) It may be hard to keep a kite flying all of the time.

2Mile has somewhat of a windshadow near the launch point for SW, but now there is getting to be a lot of beach exposed. It might be possible to walk to a more favorable launch spot now from the place I normally sail from. Before the water dropped, there were "islands" there. Now it is just a long walk to them. Your best best would be to drive by sometime and take a look. It is just to the west of Vann's Tavern/Athens park on Bethel Rd. Good luck. I'd love to see some kiters (or fellow windsurfers for that matter).

BTW - I ran into a kiter a number of weeks ago at Tidwell. He seemed to think the launch would work there ok, due to the low water conditions, there is now a lot of exposed lakebed. Tidwell has good easterly winds, much like Vann's Tavern/Athens, but not as bad windshadow if the wind is from the northeast.

What happens in a black hole stays in a black hole.

Definitely a fun afternoon/evening at VP on Thursday. I was part of the late shift and didn’t get on the water until after the second squall line came thru. I had an 8.4 rigged and thought it might be too big when I first headed out, but it turned out to be a good size for me.

Big thanks to CV for towing me the last hundred yards to shore when I pulled my UJ apart with a high-speed body catapult. Ouch!
