Sailing Van Pugh Labor Day AM

Weather.com and AccuWeather are predicting enough wind for sailing the big stuff Monday, Labor Day. This is the opposite of what usually happens in the afternoon. The hard part is driving to Lake Lanier early enough to be rigged by 11 AM when the wind peaks. East wind usually dies early in the afternoon. Randy & I have have compared notes and found that AM East wind on the water can be higher that what is forecast. Randy likes sailing Tidwell.

I plan on heading to Van Pugh because it takes less gas to drive from my house and is good for the ENE direction forecast tomorrow.

Not sure where I will go on Monday. Maybe Tidwell, though might go to Galts if anybody is thinking of going.

BTW - I would definitely move the times up that Barret referenced, esp. if its sunny out. I like to get there by 8am, since often the wind dies by 11, as it did today. (Sailed 7.0 from 8:30 till 11:30)

Randy, I'm planning to go to Galts by 9. Will have to leave at about 1:45 but that should be plenty of time. Chris P and Chris S told me they might go too... Hope it's good.

Since there will probably be no boats on the water on Labor day then that should make your sail ever that much more pleasureable

Just got back. You were right. There was a line of cars about a mile long waiting to get in at the gate...

So Mimi, how was the wind, or did you give up, after seeing all the cars?

I sailed Tidwell - 7.0 from 8 to 10:15, sailed 8.4 till about 11. After that it seemed to drop off. Very nice winds, and not too many boats to deal with, early on at least.

So how was it at Van Pugh or Vann's Tav?

Randy, I got there at 9 and rigged a 7.2 right away. Chris S got there before 10. Saw Bill H while out on the water. Lots of boats, lots of holes, some good planing runs, not very epic but quite pleasant weather wise. At noon, I saw that it was not going to pick up, so I packed it in. I was hoping to see you cause I'd really love to try out your board/rig combo. I was thinking the whole time that with just the right formula board and a larger sail, I probably would have never stopped planing. I really need a new board and sail...

Randy, I got on the water at Van Pugh by 9:45AM. It was a beautiful day, but even with an 8.3 meter sail I was only able to plane now and then. Greg arrived around 11AM? & borrowed my base extension for his 8 meter sail. By noon the parking was packed and boats all over the Lake. It was a beautiful day, but I only saw whitecaps in the gusts, even in the channel.

Looks like today, and maybe wed will be much better than Labor day. Stronger winds, far fewer boats......

Well, look at the bright side - we've survived another summer and windsurfing season 2005/2006 is here!!
