Report from Cape Cod - Summer Wind & Warm Water

My wife and I have been on Cape Cod for the weekend. I rented gear from Inland Sea Windsurfing, less than a mile fron the Beach. Shop owner, Phil, was very helpful and has a limited amount of quality rental gear.

Saturday I sailed from West Dennis Beach. The forecast was for no wind, but a nice sea breeze came up mid day, so I went out on a 6.3 meter sail & 115 liter board. The beach is a mile long, but parking was very tight on the weekend. Minutes after we arrived people were turned away. The spot was very scenic with the lighthouse Inn nearby - there is a light house built into the Inn. The water was almost flat and so warm no wet suit was needed.

Today I sailed with a local kiter who introduced me to a more challenging site near Chatham. The wind on shore was blowing 26 mph from the SW. I know because a shop set up an anemometer on the beach. I sailed a 5.0 meter with an 87 liter freestyle/wave board. This site had a mild shore break, but 100 meters out we were in serious waves & wind-blown chop. The swell was 4-6 feet. It was easy to jump off the wave faces on the way out, and ride the waves returning. This was a fabulous day with epic conditions.

Big mats of seaweed along shore added to the difficulty. I had to drop off the board a number of times to clear my fin, even though it was swept back. A bump & jump weed fin would have helped sailing this site. Here the water was colder - everyone was wearing shorty wetsuits.
