Rain is coming across N. GA Saturday with a southerly breeze preceding it. From looking at Windy, etc it looks like West Point AT THE MOMENT offers the best chance of getting some sailing in before the rain hits plus temps look to be in upper 50s or lower 60s.
Time frame looks like from 10-2 on the west side of the dam.

Hmm... can I squeeze in a quick session before my son's graduation ceremony from Auburn at noon - practically a stone's throw from West Point? ?
Probably +1 for WP
You could sail from 9-10:30.
Congrats on your son's graduation. Also, congrats on your pay (no tuition) raise.
My wife would probably shoot me if I tried something like. Mostly because there'd be a 99% chance that I'd be late.
Thank you William.
When I posted, I almost wrote about not opting for trying to sail because I like to stay married - so, same feelings as you expressed.
Unfortunately, not quite clear cut on the raise as he is continuing onto grad school there. Looking for financial aid, TA position etc. but all that isn't final yet.
Something just dawned on me - you have an hour wiggle room. Auburn is in Central time.
Still looking good. Any takers? It's about 1:10 from downtown Atlanta. There are two spots by the dam, the one closer to the dam is where we usually go but the other is nice as well. They are about a half mile apart.
Looked on Google Earth, does it work for kiters? South works? Looks like there's a real open park further North, Pyne Rd. Park?
If the water is low enough, you can go out and launch off the beach- I think - speaking as a windsurfer of 30+ years (which means I don't know crap about kites).
However, Pyne Rd. looks really. I'd be tempted to at least scout it out. It's about a half mile fetch and it's a lot flatter there so that makes a huge difference. That's about as good as Old Fed if not better. I may be tempted, too. The only catch is that all that open space may be camping.
The air is pretty clean by the dam. Again, everything is pretty low. I don't know if the boat traffic is better or worse at either. Traffic down by the dam even in summer is inconsequential. This time of year, compared to Lanier, it feels like you stepped into a zombie apocalypse because you see so little activity.
One catch I just discovered - because to get to Pyne Rd, you have to go through LaGrange - it's just as fast to go down to the dam. If you were sailing a west and sailing on the other side it's a few minutes faster.
You may have come across something really nice.
I'm thinking that if you do end up by the dam, launching on the beach across from Dam Rd. where the "295" road marker is, should work. The berm there is only 30 ft high? I hope one of the West Point/Pine Mtn boys say something on Facebook
Langdon and I are headed down. Should be on the water around 10:30. Not sure where, yet. 60% west side of the dam, 40% Pyne Rd. I'll check in the am if anyone else is interested.
Read today in the Gainesville paper that Lanier's surface is down to about 54-555 if that helps anyone's decision.
If the rain holds off, Vann's Tavern is looking pretty good for a mid-morning/lunch session, too.
Current plan is park closest to the dam.
Text me 404-313-0437 if anyone needs help.
I had fun. Glad to have a big wing and big sail.
Heavy boat traffic on WP
Maybe 4 or 5 fishing boats and 1 sailboat
Where did y’all launch?
Alan
West side next to the dam
A bit of a report
Steve Campbell happened to be in the area and joined us. Winds were 6-12 so we only flew about half the time. Temps in the 60s but the water is pretty cold.
But, it was amazing. The lake is down about 4 feet (plenty of room for kites, we think). The shallow slope of the shore line plus that we only saw 5 boats all day meant the water was dead flat even in the gusts. One of the boats was a sail boat. Once you were up, you could accelerate and it was like sliding across a wooden floor in socks. Smooooth. Steve only brought a 7.0 with his NP Glide M foil and was still getting a decent amount of rides. Overcast the whole time but no rain.
