Need help from Web guy, Chris P., Gend and Randy

I am thinking of pulling the trigger on a Wind SUP. I know that Randy has a Serinity, Gene has a paddle board, Chris just bought a paddleboard and Web Guy knows everything there.

I want a paddleboard to paddle 20% of time, surf 20% of time and sail off the dock 60% of the time.

I also, wonder about using it in winter when water is cold. Maybe on 50 + days

Looking to keep exercising with balance and work out.

I have complete rig of 460 mast and boom to fit small or med size sail.

It appears all I have to buy is board, leash and paddle.

Help me come to a decision if you will

See my post about " I wonder how you can find one of these "

Thanks guys.

Hard to beat the price here, I own the 11' and it is a very capable windsurfer, sup and paddle surfer. They only have the 10'6" left, which would probably be even better if you don't have any newbies using it. The problem is no daggerboard, so it's not great at getting upwind on the lighter days, rails are thin enough to sink though.

This one was almost purchased, but I decided to go with a dedicated touring/race sup. It would seem to be better for lighter winds and flat water supping. I like the removable center fin on this board for newbies and light wind from unfavorable directions (aka every day in Atlanta) . I found this price point to be a good value too.

Also, you get free shipping from Isthmus, they are knowledgeable if you call them too.

wtf do I know? I'm just some guy on the internet with an opinion.

Since you asked - since 80% of the time you are going to be sub-planing or in light wind, go longer than shorter. Other than that, do some online searching, especially the English and Australian forums and see what the opinions are. Also, email Tim Carter and get his input as he uses his SUP in the surf quite frequently.

email me and I'll get you his address.

I'm going to go down this road in about 6 months myself. I think my wife would enjoy having one.

I used my PacifiCo a lot for several years. A SUP/Windsurf combo is a great way to go. I used it 90% of the time as a windsurfer, and could sail it in almost any wind that came along. Worked fine in light wind - not a race longboard but more than adequate and easy to use a big sail on it. I did SUP with a from time to time - the main advantage was I knew I could do something with it if I went to the lake if the wind blew or not. More often than not, I ended up sailing, but it got me out to the water and that was good. Tried it in the ocean a few times in surf, but never did that much - just not enough opportunities.

Gene has my PacifiCo now and mainly uses it for SUP. He seems happy with it. (If not, I'll buy it back from him. Biggrin ) I am definitely thinking of getting rid of a bunch of my stuff and getting windsup type board, but I have no real idea of which is best.

mprazak:

It does not appear that the RRD Classic V2 has a centerboard. They do have an 11' V2 for $899.

What does anyone think, do I need a dagger board or does it just get in the way of things. I have read that you can sink the rail and go upwind if need be.

Dagerboard needs to be removable to use as SUP and surfboard.

Some more questions??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Do you really need a dagerboard?

Do you really need footstraps?

If you have a dagerboard should you be able to remove it from the board?

Does a curved nose matter?

Is 31 lbs too heavy and what about 37 lbs?

I think I still lean toward the boards I have when the wind goes over 20mph?

Questions, questions, questions???????????

I would get footstraps. You never know when you might be out paddling or sailing and lots more wind than expected comes up. Plus, at least for my PacifiCo I sailed it in a lot of wind regularly. Pointy nose would be more for lightwind sailing and not so much for planing. Daggerboard is pretty optional.

Bic makes a WindSup with a daggerboard. They are really durable.

Timely & interesting subject. Off top of my head, if your sailing off your dock very much length, and a kick-up centerboard would both be advantageous, although to answer another question, yes, "daggerboards" do indeed get in the way of foot placement. It's an unfortunate trade-off. Most all centrboards are fully removable. I wouldn't think footstraps would be all that useful, plus they c"an also get in the way, although if a board came with strap inserts why not have the option? Weight - lighter is nicer - but as you know, it has it's price. The RRD seems good for the $ although no centerboard. If you wanted to paddlesurf it, you probably wouldn't want it any narrower than it's 31", for stability reasons - if anything, maybe wider.

For surfing purposes, I would say to go with the 10'5" model. It's probably the best shape for all of your needs. It still has a good amount of length, but not too much. Plus it has the tri-fin mounts instead of the single fin, and the wood version is only 26.1 lbs. 190 liters of volume for the 10'5", compared to 195 for the 11', so you aren't losing much buoyancy, while taking 7" off the nose to help with surfing.
