Today I sailed with Joe O'leary at Van Pugh. Despite a forecast of 10-15mph, there was more wind on the water and we had a great time. It was warm & sunny enough to take off the hood & gloves. David Wade brought his Wave Runners and measured Joe's speed at 25mph. His board speed was much faster than the 18mph wind. I got out on the water about the time Dave left, and of course the wind kicked up a couple of extra knots. From 3:30 to 4:30PM we were maxed out on our 8.3 & 9m sails with full planing jibes.

The above is the wind reports from G-Ville. Generally 9-13. It's really interesting that the wind reports are so lame and forecasts usually weak, yet there is plenty of good wind at the lake and often more than forecast or reported at Gainsville. As I recall, the forecast for yesterday was 5-10. This has been happening a lot lately. I realize using big sails plays a role, but it pays to be optimistic this time of year!

I think its that, plus wind that is colder than the lake seems to flow really well. Wind hotter than the lake, is not good, as we learn each spring. And I would underestimate the impact of good old fashioned luck.
