Linda,

You can probably get a bolt at Ace Hardware. Did you lose the fin in the water, or on land?

the fin is in the lake
I kind of flipped the board when I lifted it in the water, so I suppose that's where the bolt dropped. I waded around looking for it, but the more you wade. the murkier the water.
thanks, I never thought of Ace Hardware. theirs won't have the little handle on top but I can do without that.

lost fin

I put the board down on the grass by the playset. I'm thinking I may have removed the fin, but I was so tired. If I did remove it, I would have put the bolt back in and carried it to the truck and could have dropped it on the way as I was carrying center board, mast foot, life vest, and harness. It was quite a while before I went back for the board, that's when I noticed the fin was gone, but everything else was off the board too. sorry to bore everyone with details. If I can't find it, you the man Gene.

not so stupid, its not the most famous place in Atlanta.
look on the left side of the web site where it says places to sail, I think that will get you there
about my fin, it is a straight one and may say Mistral Rage (I'm not sure)but I have one a little shorter that I bought at the same time from Gene, of course, and thats what the shorter one says
I started out with a rhino type yesterday and got so desperate I switched to a straighter fin.

Linda,
You'll probably need an M5 (and if I recall correctly a M5 x 1.0) - ie metric - in stainless which Ace isn't likely to carry. You can either retap to 1/4 x 20 or get the right screw from Gene, etc.

M5 and 1/4 look alot alike until you try to get the screw in more than a turn or two and at that point you either realize something is wrong or proceed to strip the threads.

Lots of folks will retap their metric fins so they can easily get replacements at HD or Ace, others say that it weakens the brass fin insert too much.

The other advantage of going to Gene, Chuck, et all, is that you make sure you get the proper length and screw head. I've got an ugly mix of flat and Phillips and it often takes two screw drivers to get in a fin. Not optimal but I'm so right-brained (chaotic), it hurts.

Of course Gene is the best bet in your area to get exactly what you need but I did go to a warehouse in Marietta that has any type bolt you need. I think it was called Threads for the South. It is behind the old Coca Cola plant off 41. I even went to a hex type bolt because the phillips seemed to round out over time. The hex type with a small nut driver works great. It is stainless too. But Gene is probably the best way to go to save effort because he offers free helpfull advice and expertise.

thanks, that will be a very helpful site

actually the person who was windsurfing at the same time and picked up a fin could send me a private message on the web site or they can call me at 770-382-1028. I would like to look at what you found. I'm not talking to you, Bill.
