Kiting on Lanier in the summer?

Okay, so I am from Florida now living in Alpharetta. Im going home (to FL) for a month in June and am going to learn to Kiteboard... knowing myself will probably invest in my own gear and then will be back up here in July. Is there any kiting activity on the lake in July? or is there not enough wind? I know I can go to Jekell but would like to get out closer to home. Can you only kite on Lanier in the winter?

There are few windy days during the summer on Lake Lanier, but when we get wind it can be very strong. Summer winds are usually associated with cyclonic storms, tropical depressions and hurricanes, that blow from the East. You could kite surf on the steadier wind that sometimes blows in advance of the storm, but during the storm, up and downdrafts and sudden changes in direction make kite surfing a risky proposition.

The windy part of the year, when the prevailing direction is northwest, begins in late fall and extends into spring.

It would be very VERY rare that you could kite on Lanier during the summer. As Barrett pointed out, you might get the occasional tropical storms / hurricanes coming through, but other than that, consistent wind that time of year is very hard to come by. Even in winter, it will be pretty rare to get good wind.

Don't get too discouraged, but just have realistic expectations that if you want to improve you will need to do some traveling.

Thank you both so much... I figured that was the case Smile I saw a YouTube clip of someone on lanier in mid winter (30degrees).... I was thinking I might just have to enjoy my Kite at the beach where its a little warmer year round! Smile

One additional note: You will have far more days in Atlanta with good wind for windsurfing than for kiting. In my experience kits don't handle gusts nearly as well and it's a challenge and risky to launch a kite along the tree-lined shore of the Lake. During the winter, windsurfing is far warmer because you're mostly out of the water on your board rather than in the cold water on a kite board that sinks.
