Strange weather. It blew like crazy, but there wasn't much action on the water. I guess we had the classic cold water killing the warm wind syndrom. It really looked it should have been 5.0, but on the water it was more like 7.0.
So, did the wind settle in at Lanier?

Sounds like Lanier. I had the early shift from 1-3. Not so much gusty as off & on. 6.5 was good when it was on. Later, I was wishing for a 5.5. As usual w/off-on, the chop was a little gnarly. It was sho' nice to sail without gloves or a beanie. Maybe it got better late.
Not that I had a chance to go but when I saw 70+ degrees, NW wind and the weather having gone from cold to warm so quickly, I was wondering what would happen.
Pretty much the classic gust/lull syndrome at Galts. In the gusts, I was really well powered on 5.2, and Mimi on 4.7. In the lulls, no sail was big enough. But there were plenty of gusts so it was a fun day. Typical "Galtsurfing". 70 degree wind and 45 degree water just don't mix that well. (Maybe we should call this phenom the "Fragakis Effect" since Webguy was the first to theorize about it.)
I'm hoping the kiters will chime in. I'm wondering if being able to fly their kites above the lake negated the problem of the wind not making it all the way down to the lake.
What happens in a black hole stays in a black hole.
I was wondering about the kite idea too. I recall specualting with Gregg Cattanach years ago about the cold water/ warm air effect at a spring regatta. We recruited Bert Eskridge, a meteorologist, to confrim our theory. He did, and offered the idea that the cold layer could be just a few meters thick (just out of reach of our sails). So, kite dudes, was it windier than the water looked??
Bert said his wife claims he took up WSing because we are the only people that think being a meteorolgist is cool.
The kiting was very good today. During the time that it was on, it was really on. The Seans and Khalil were on 12s, I was on an 11. We were nicely powered most of the time. Emilio was on a 14 and very powered.
I got waaayy overpowered once during a really big gust. Pretty scary for a minute...
Perhaps the wind was stronger up higher. I had my kite between 11 and 1 the entire time so as not to get pulled off my edge so I can't comment on what it was like near the water. I did note that we had loads of whitecaps.

What a great saliling session today. As Mel reported above, I probably had way too big of a kite (Sonic 14m) for the prevailing conditionsm but being so overpower was lots of fun when jumping. I think I did some of the most flotier jumps I have ever done. Lanier is always gusty but today was at its baddest behavior. My kite was jumping from back to front and it felt like the wind was coming with holes even at 50ft above the water and even in the top of the gust... really wierd wind, but fun nontheless.... Rgds, Emilio.
javascript:emoticon('')At Van Pugh Park on L. Lanier the wind got better later in the afternoon. As Chris described, it was on and off until about 3PM, then it picked up and blew continuously until around 5:30 when I quit sailing. I used an 84 liter board and 5.2 sail. Although I rigged a second larger sail, it wasn't needed. We had 9 windsurfers at Van Pugh, a good showing for a weekday afternoon.
