How to install a deep tuttle foil box

Thanks to our friends at Seatext Boards. Convert your old board or if the box in your old board is showing signs of not being up to the task.

Re: How to install a deep tuttle foil box

I was kind of wondering why he thought a formula board would need a new box since it presumably already had a deep tuttle, but I guess if you wanted to use it for foiling that might be necessary. Better safe than sorry (not that I did it that way with my f136......)

BTW - I was really impressed with his skills in that he seemed to do all the work "free hand" or at least that is how it looked. Also - if anyone is tempted to do this themselves make sure you have a proper mask/filter system like he does. You don't want to inhale any of that black carbon fiber powder. (Note- I wouldn't even trust a plague doctor mask.)

What happens in a black hole stays in a black hole.

Re: How to install a deep tuttle foil box

Three reasons to replace:
1) The existing box was no longer up to the task and cracks were starting to appear.
2) This being a recent vintage formula board which do a decent job of being a foil raceboard for those starting out, owner anticipating the strain of a 95-110cm mast going upwind which is pretty different than what most of us are doing.
3) Accident damage. They got to the beach sooner than they thought. Shok

Yeah, I kept looking for a template or guide and was thinking my freehand skills with a router are no where near good enough. And, totally agree on the mask. Carbon or glass. Doesn't matter. You don't want to be breathing that stuff. If you even sand in sunlight, you'll see all the little bits floating in the air. I definitely use a mask for that stuff.

Thanks! I think the hard part is getting the courage to make the first cut. I think that's why it's been easier to do rather complicated repairs because, at that point, you don't have a choice, you have to go ahead and start cutting and digging. For some reason, I dread dealing with the pads more than anything. I have an old Starboard FreeFormula that I need to modify. I just haven't gotten over the hump of starting to peel off the pads.

I appreciate the video. We have only had one windy in two plus weeks so we appreciate anything that reminds us of getting on the water.

This work is a bit long and you have to be meticulous.
The easiest way is to replace the straps completely.

Thank you, Gwen. It'll be an interesting battle between my tendencies toward ADHD - which will want to rush things - and OCD - where I spend a week filling every pin hole.

And, then I wake to see this in the RSS feed: https://www.seatexboards.com/meantime-in-peru/

Looks like a great remod of an old Starboard formula board.

Here's just a glimpse
