Hey I am a novice in need of advice

hey
i was introduced to windsurfing by a friend and really want to learn. Luckily, i was given a windsurfing board with a sail and boom and mast (don't know if those are the part names since i'm new to this). However, I was wondering if there was any shop near that could tell me if the board i got is appropriate for learning. My neighbor said that it look in good condition. Also, i would like to know if there is any place to get lessons or tips nearby too. I live near Buford Dam so I'm close to Lake Lanier. I appreciate any info. Thanks

Gene Mathis has a shop near where you live, Windsense, and can help you with your questions. 770-967-0104. BTW - lessons are much more helpful than videos, though videos are useful for reinforcing what you learned.

Also, just post what type of board and sail it is. We can let you know if is is suitable for learning.

Hi - I'm Chris, I live in Atlanta and I teach windsurfing. As far as the question of appropriateness of the gear you were given, there are several factors that come into play, among them your weight, height, and the volume and dimensions of the board, the size of the sail, etc. If your gear is old (seems a safe guess . since it was free) there will be folks responding to you here who will tell you that it's basically worthless. Your new old gear may or may not be appropriate, but in my opinion that has relatively little to do with it's date of manufacture, although the modern wider boards do make learning easier, especially at the beginning. If you want advice in this matter, you can call me at 404-525-7190 - late morning is best time. Good instruction is absolutely crucial for most beginners and I can provide that. Also I have lots of used gear for sale and can help if your gear has issues.
