Heading to Maui in 2 weeks

May 25 to June 8 in Maui. Anybody been there lately? Anthing new. What shop did you use? Does anyone rent kayaks without a guide?
Staying in Kehi. Whole family is going. Drew and Brittany will windsurf. I don't think Brittany can waterstart but Drew can.

Is there a WalMart there?

Don't tell me about all the shark attacks, I have already looked them up.

You should have a fabulous time there Dave. I've always used Hawaiian Island Surf and Sport and never been disappointed. They're on Dairy Rd. near the airport. I don't believe there's a WalMart there but there is a Costco. It's across the street from Hawaiian Island. If you're not a Costco memeber, I suggest you use Safeway in Kihei. Get a discount card there - it's free and will save you a bunch.

I've sailed there 13 years and never seen a shark but I guess they're out there. The safest place to sail is definitely Kanaha Beach Park (especially inside the reef). If the wind is more northerly than easterly, the wind may will be better on the Kihei side. My experience is that the further you go out on the Kihei side, the windier it gets. For a little adventure, you can try Sprecklesville on the north shore. The rental shop can give directions. It's got no fresh water showers or grassy rigging area, but the beach is stunning and the sailing great. Oh, and for the Euros there, clothing is kinda optional.

a few great non-windsurfing activities I can recommend are:

Molokini snorkeling (take the Paragon II - it's the fastest sailboat on the island. We got it up to 22 knots on the way back from Molokini).

Maui Aquarium - it's in Maalaea.

Haleakala - the 10,000 foot dormant volcano. The views from the top are awesome. One possibility is to sign up for the bike down a volcano program.

What ever you do, you'll have a great time.

Hang Loose!

I went to Maui in 2002 and there was a small Walmart at that time in the neighborhood just south of the airport.

Maui

David,

I hope you will have a great time.

What did you decide for the equipment rental and car rental?

I'm going for 2 weeks in early July, plan to stay in Kihei and sail right there from the condo, with some trips to the north shore. I'm still trying to decide on the car and the equipment. Maui Windsurf Company seems to have the best rate if you pre-book in advance - but you have to commit to a 7 day rental.

Let me know what you found.

Marek

I have a family of four so we rented a minivan. $550 for two weeks Dollar.com. There are so many windsurf rental places on Maui that I will deal with that when I get there. No need to advance book gear. I am staying in Kehi also in a condo ocean front. I have found a 2/2 with central air. Everytime I have gone to Maui before the best I could find was a condo with a little window a/c unit in the bedroom so that leaves the rest of the condo hot sometimes. Maui can get hot at times.
