Hartwell Sunday?

Langdon and I are pondering a trip away from the madding crowds.

Anybody else interested?

Re: Hartwell Sunday?

Can you send me:
- Address or launch location name (sth that will be recognized by GPS sw)
- what time you intend to be there (and maybe till when) roughly
- how best to check weather there (I use windy, iwundsurf, noaa, windguru as well as links on the forum page) - what location to look up in either of these or what you are seeing for winds tomorrow

I intend to sail. Never tried Hartwell before. Range for my car might be an issue.

Re: Hartwell Sunday?

Depends if the SC/NC guys join us and I need to do some research on if the Hart Co Parks are open.

Last I checked, it looked like a SW forecast so Green Pond Landing (n in SC) or Long Point Rec area (s in GA) Hover over the icons on the map to see the names. The locations are very accurate. https://windsportatlanta.com/wiki/Hartwell_Lake Green Pond might be closer time wise since it's slower going to Hartwell on the local roads. It's about 100 miles to the state line. Click the google logo in the lower left corner to go to Google maps directly. Long Point is 112 miles (1:49) from mi casa and Green Pond is 113 (1:43)

You've got the forecasts wired. No guarantees - no tears if we get there and the wind sucks. Biggrin I've been looking at Windy to get some sort of sense where the wind is (not just how much in a single spot)

Thinking maybe 11am-ish arrival? No idea if it gets crowded.

What??? You think I would drive 100 miles and not whine (ok, my word, slightly exaggerated from yours) or blame somebody if the wind is a bust? Come on, that's just too high a bar! ?

Joking aside, thx!

Hartwell sounds fun BUT....

I plan to go to Old Federal tomorrow, Sunday, early, maybe 10:30, bring lunch and make a day of it.

I’m going to old Federal if the wind is decent.
Closer to the boat if it isn’t.

Sunday, early, maybe 10:30,

Or may need to be there around 9.30 based on a Van Pugh ride thru at 3:15 Saturday, only 3 or 4 open regular parking spaces and 2 open Boat Trailer parking spaces. The place was packed, and Van Pugh middle was full also.

I am going to go early.

This just occurred to me. If the parks are open, but the restrooms are closed you better watch where you step.......and where you swim......

wow. what a wind range. You'll be foiling? I'll try to make an appearance. will be ready for "ninja" if I make it! Lol (did you ever learn anything about Long Point being open or not?)

If first time to Green Pond (and I"m sure you'd figure this out)... turn left at 4 way once inside the park, then first right to park on top of grassy knoll above the little beach. that's our routine

and PS: as for the "crowd forecast" ..... hard to say. Low 80sF on a sunny Sunday, on a lake, and at a pubic access point, that's newly available to a quarantined state??? I"m a little nervous (though the beach at Green Pond doesn't often have many folks lounging on it, and there's plenty of grass space available for rigging, and plenty of parking). No matter what, though, I'd still expect less lake and park traffic than Lanier.

PSS: Western Carolina Sailing Club apparently JUST installed a live weather station:

What’s interesting about that pumping motion is the torque he’s got going on side to side with his feet. He’s pumping the sail but jerking the board side to side. That’s what I see anyway. I definitely need to figure out that skill so I can go out in much lighter winds. Right now, I am totally relying on the heavy gusts to get up. Funny how we just move on to the next challenge . Neil

Please do persist. it was much easier for most of us to learn to windfoil after Chris and William could show and tell us how to do it. So we need you to progress and lead the way for the rest of us. Yes 3

I wouldn't assume the technique is the same for a wing as for sail/wind foil board. This guy's method seems quite different. Of course, I'm sure nothing is this easy in real life.
