Rosey and Arlington: This part of my post got clipped; lets try again to post the CGWA announcement: CGWA Members, Roosevelt Park is open to the public per the US Army Corps of Engineers, however, recovery operations are still going on at Arlington. Port of Arlington requests that you stay on the Washington side of the river in that general area as jet crash debris is still being removed from the river on the Oregon side. The Port couldn't give a date as to when Arlington will be open, but guessed it could be at least a month. Will keep you posted. Diane Barkhimer, Executive Director - 07/27 14:58
Rosey & Arlington: Posted Tue 27 July by the CGWA: <> My first-hand observations: I went by Roosevelt Sun and again Monday. 4-6 craft, from a Zodiac boat to a huge floating crane, with recovery operations and equipment involving Air Force, Marines, Navy, and Corps of Engineers assets busy on land and the water. Parts of aircraft and crew rained over the whole area, but at least the parks and park waterfronts have been picked up to protect the public. On Monday the recovery operations moved in front of the Roosevelt launch area to concentrate on aircraft parts just offshore. The whole Roosevelt/Arlington section of the river is fairly busy and dynamic as these boats crawl (the derrick barge) or zoom(Zodiac, a cruiser) around the area searching the bottom (the river is a hundred feet deep there) and the water. The county sheriff's office says the water is off limits to the public, while the CGWA says the public can use the water on the Washington side, but the real issues are: 1) the Arlington launch and waterfront are closed to heavy recovery operations along that shore and 2) the recovery boats are quite busy over that whole mile of the river and do NOT need our interference. If any of us gets in their way, it's a good bet that piece of the river will be shut down. They have a grisly job to do, and don't need to be concerned about kites or windsurfers interfering

Hey,

The windlord and wife will be there Aug 6 through 9. We're doing the site seeing thing since we've never been to the Gorge and the wife doesn't windsurf. The agreement is that I'm allowed to sail on Monday the 9th. That should also allow time to scope things out a bit.

From what I've read, the Event Site looks to be the best bet for an intermediate Atlanta windsurfer. I must say I was a little intimided arranging rental equipment (Bigwinds). They told me a 9.0 and 135 liter board would be too big. They said a 4.2 and 85-95 liters would be about right. We'll see about that.

Oh, the accomodations in Hood River were pretty booked up so we're staying downstream at the Best Western in Troutdale.

Bigwinds worked great for me. I got the board w/3 sails deal. 87ltr F2 and 6.0, 5.3, 4.5 and later traded 6.0 for a 4.0 (but didn't use it). Say hi to Joe Morgan in shipping.

Event site is very civilized but can be less windy. Sail "down" (upwind) toward White Salmon River bridge on Washington side to get in more solid wind. Be sure to spectate some at the Hatch... very amusing even for non-sailors-- loopage, willi-vulcan-skipper thingies, huge air, 40 ft jumps by kiters, etc, etc.

Ginny & I took in the Hootie, et al show at Mary Hill Winery. Neat Place. I think Willie Nelson is there while you're there. It's past The Dalles, maybe a 45 min beautiful drive from HR.

There a lot of people who put together trips like our club Hatteras deals-- house w/ 3-4 couples. Makes it a lot cheaper.

Flipper - my wife and I will be arriving in Portland on September 4th. Maybe we can get some info from you, meet up with you. We plan on staying in Hood River, haven't made the reservation yet. We plan on staying Mt. Hood till Monday or Tuesday (6th or 7th) then heading over to Cannon Beach for a day or two before back to Indy. Windlord, maybe you can give us a report for the sightseeing thing (I am in same boat in terms of TOW). Brian
