With more rain than wind, the forecast is not looking good for Sun afternoon. Let's hope the Parks open before the season get underway. If not, we have one room available on our Outer Banks trip during the 3rd week of Oct. The house is on the water with a private launch.

Seriously - how does they get away with refusing to pay workers but requiring them to work? Isn't that against the 13th amendment? Any legal opinions?

Apparently, this guy is as confused as you are. Oops. he's a congressman.

owww.... [biting my lip]

Essential workers are getting paid. The "non-essential" ones (like the guys who certify that a plane isn't likely to fall out of the sky, useless gits) aren't. This may help, it's a pretty good explanation:

I am sure it sucks to be classified as "non-essential", but anytime these shutdowns happens, federal employees ALWAYS get their back-pay (even if they did not work). Us private sector grunts wouldn't mind some 'forced' paid vacation time once in a while. Heck, I don't think I have ever had paid vacation time.

Not Getting Paid to Not Work, I can relate.

But to Eventually Get Paid to Not Work, I don't get it. Why bother to close anything? Get back to work you bunch of deadbeats. Open our Parks NOW! (an update on that shortly.) Can things be any more messed up? Coming Soon...Debt Limit! What a bunch of Bozos.

(AP)
The House voted unanimously Saturday to provide back pay for the nearly 800,000 federal "non-essential" workers who have been sent home.

The Senate is expected to approve a similar bill, and President Obama has already said that his administration would "strongly support" the legislation.

Instead, how about make it - Any non-essential workers who want to eventually get paid, can continue to work. Or Dont and Dont.

Sorry to interrupt these commentaries, but I have a public service announcement. To see for myself the damage created by Hurricane Shutdown I visited all of my usual launch spots on the lake today (and even a few I've never tried) circling the entire lake. My conclusion is that if there is any impact at all, its pretty limited. Parking lots at boat ramps were pretty much normal for this time of year. Most of the "parks" were closed but the associated boat ramps were being used a lot. Old Fed was closed. Sunrise was business as usual. West Bank park had a couple of dozen cars lined up behind the locked gates. A few placed were "closed for the Season (Kieth's Bridge, Burton Mill) Lanier park was closed, but East Bank Park was packed with boats. Beyond that, mainly business as usual. Bathrooms were locked. So draw your own conclusions and don't pee in the lake.

It's not about getting paid. From the Washington Times:

The Park Service appears to be closing streets on mere whim and caprice. The rangers even closed the parking lot at Mount Vernon, where the plantation home of George Washington is a favorite tourist destination. That was after they barred the new World War II Memorial on the Mall to veterans of World War II. But the government does not own Mount Vernon; it is privately owned by the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association. ...

“It’s a cheap way to deal with the situation,” an angry Park Service ranger in Washington says of the harassment. “We’ve been told to make life as difficult for people as we can. It’s disgusting.”

In the 17 previous "shutdowns", open air monuments and most parks were left alone. This time they are "reaching out" and shutting down private enterprises. One that is planning to fight back is the Avon Pier (from The Outer Banks Voice):

Avon Pier, Lost Colony to defy Park Service shutdown orders
...
Because the pier’s entrance ramp starts inside the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, it is considered a concession of the Park Service and was ordered to close Tuesday.

A post on Facebook from the pier Friday said it would be open starting Saturday morning.

Not exactly what we need right now (which would be a cat video) but this does sort of fit with the various symptoms of the "End of Days" we seem to be experiencing.

Membership at LLSC is $740/yr for Regular members. You can also join as an Associate member for $370. After 2 years, an Associate member must become a Regular member or a Social member. Social members continue at the same $370/yr. Initiation fee is equal to one year's dues. Billing is quarterly. I think the initiation fee can be spread over the 1st year. Because the COE lease is going up, the dues will ratchet up for the next few years and cap at $1000. Associate & Social will be half the Regular dues each year.

Associate and Social members cannot store boats at the club or hold office or vote in election of officers, etc. If I were joining now, this is what I'd do. (They won't let me downgrade my membership). I don't keep any windsurfing gear there and I don't want to hold office... nor do I care much about who occupies the various positions.

I continue as a member for the easy access, occasionally camping, the very active Junior sailing program and to host the fall windsurfing race. In lean times it has still seemed worth it.

I have a sense that most of my windsurfing homies have some reluctance to set foot there. I'm not sure why. It might be a perception of LLSC having a "Yacht Club" attitude, where big boat owners look down there noses at the lesser boats, or something like that. I can tell you that, with a few exceptions, this is SO not true.

Fifty-something years ago, when the Lanier was first filling up, a bunch of small boat (Thistle) sailors formed the club and with very deliberate intention, named it a "sailing", not yacht club. The emphasis has always been on racing, but there are lots of cruising sailors and people who only come there to use the beach or camp or just hang out. For me, the atmosphere has always been totally welcoming and I think most people there appreciate... maybe admire what we do.

I like to compare notes with my golfing-fanatic brother whose club sports an initiation fee of something like $60K and annual dues of $10K... (and that just gets you in the door). Of course, LLSC doesn't have a beautifully groomed golf course and pool– but they don't have Lanier.

That's a big ass water hazard...

Seriously, what's the difference between social and regular member?

Nice pic. I remember that day, cruising around the slips over at Aqualand. Longboards can be so cool.

Re: Gene, Serious Question: Is Van Pugh Closed?

I think original motive in creating the Social membership was to allow people that mostly just crew on boats, an easy path to join. Also for some non-sailing locals to join.
Social members can't store boats at the club, hold office or vote. Their dues are half the Regular member dues, $370/yr or $92.50 per quarter.
