Foil harness line length and the insanity of racing

The reason longer harness adjustable harness lines really help sailing overpowered on a foil. Part of the reason is that when overpowered, unlike a fin where we lean back and out, on a foil, quoting Sam Ross: hinge at the hips.

Here's a good photo of a bunch of PWA guys and their stance. I get it that almost no one here races but it does show what you want to look like when you are trying to hold the foil down in a gust without blowing up. From the same FB post, is the insanity of a mark rounding just as a bonus extra.

Two observations:

1.) I thought I was the only guy who never get the harness line right for foiling,
2.) When I had that same stance, everyone said it was terrible, and I should raise my boom. Maybe I was just ahead of my time.

1. No one escapes that one.
2. Your boom probably was too low... Biggrin Higher booms and longer lines than finning, imho, works a treat. I lowered my booms about 2-3" on the smaller gear in OBX. YMMV

Don't feel bad, Randy. The bike world is laughing at a former TdF winner who said the other day he'd been riding a bike the wrong size for like three years. Lol

https://road.cc/content/news/chris-froome-reveals-bike-set-discrepancies-304917

"...it may come as a surprise to learn that Chris Froome has apparently spent the last three seasons riding a bike with the wrong set-up, including a saddle height and reach that were “centimetres” apart from his Tour de France-winning position at Team Sky."

For context: I was riding a bike that's not normally in my rotation the other day and something felt off. Lowered the seat 3mm and I was good.

idk - my stance looks pretty perfect compared to the current pros shown in you pic above.

Look at the two in front (Nico P and Johan S) and note the angle of the harness lines, their extended arms and outboard hips/knees. If your boom were a touch higher and lines a touch longer you'd be nailing it. Good

The other two guys are just exiting a jibe and not fully committed to the harness yet. The guy on the right is a youth WC. Here's a screen grab from one of his FB reels: https://www.facebook.com/reel/708380207765991

Again, these guys are at the pointy end of things and most of us can't and don't want to foil there but it does show what position and settings help with being way powered up on a foil.

I sometimes get in a low stance like that when well powered on race foils but I'm not sure if it makes me any faster. I'll have to experiment more. The big thing is my stance probably suffers when going back between fin and foil.
