Fall Classic Report?

How was your Fall Classic? How was the wind? How many people showed up? Do you have results? Did any DivII's race? Did everyone have a good time?

It was a very successful and fun event for all. We had 21 competitors coming from several states, 3 fleets (sport, open 7.5, open unlimited) and enough wind for 7 races over 2 days. Sat was 5-10 or so, Sunday started out looking very lame, but picked up and we had whitecaps by the end. I think we had a least 2 Div 2 boards, plus my Serenity and one formula board with a 12.0 sail. The formula sailor dropped it in favor of a longboard, however, as planning winds weren't happening on the first day. After the racing several sailors tried the Windsurfing Magazine Serenity board, and others went out to enjoy the wind and water.

I saw Radny tuning up between races on Sunday in a enough wind for longboards to do the upwind-planing-thing. He and Dave Stanger were stuck together like glue... very impressive Serenity speed and pointing.

There was wind both days but Sunday was really interesting and fun-- enough wind to forget about pumping for the most part, and shifty enough so you had to pay superclose attention to what was happening and where to go next. The top four Unlimiteds each got firsts, (three of us got two each). We were really mixing it up. In the end Stanger beat everybody as usual, even though he sailed with a 7.5 sail against an 8.5, two 9.5s, a 9.9, 10.9 and 11.9. He is just amazing. Kevin Osborn sailed the Div II and when it blew, he absolutely raged, out pointing everybody by a lot. Kevin finished third, just one point behind me.

In the Limited fleet, Scott Spreen and "Indy" Joe Quigley (age 65!) tied exactly. Scott won the tie breaker with better finishes overall. Randy was close on their heels, finishing third. Perennial contender, Pat Nugent was tied for the lead after Saturday. But he was conspicuously absent on Sunday, judging the early conditions a pumping contest. You shoulda gone for it Pat!

"Lightning" Pam Barron dominated Sport Fleet, posting 4 bullets to win First overall. Dan Gutting was 2nd and our own William Herderich was just 3 points back in third. Jennifer Quigley 'had a lock' on second for women. Eight year old Zoe Genet also made an appearance on the course (or somewhere near it) to pick up a special trophy too. WAY TO GO ZOEEEE!!

Thank you to all that helped put the regatta together. We had a 'dream team' on Race Committee: Edith Collins was P.R.O. She is a U.S. Sailing Judge and in demand nationwide- lucky us. Tom Graham is a U.S. Sailing Race Officer and set marks on our course (talk about over qualified!). Vinny & Hollis Mendes, who worked the Mistral course at the '96 Olympics, were on the other mark/water boat. Susan Reddaway, who grew up sailing at LLSC and has more local knowledge than just about anybody, lent her considerable expertise. Graciela & Tom Wynn and Jim Burke also assisted on RC. It is not an easy thing to set courses that are fair in very shifty conditions. Even with the lake so low they were still anchoring marks in 80+ feet of water. It's a lot of work and they all did it perfectly.

Pam Barron & Jim Burke were the dream team off the water. They pretty much single-handedly fed the hungry hoard. Thank you both! Gregg Cattanach once again managed the registration & scoring.

Thanks el mucho to our sponsors: Windsense, White Cap Windsurfing, Liquid Surf and Sail, Ezzy Sails, Aerotech, Chinook and Sweetwater Brewing (via Dan Burch). Muchas gracias, tambien to La Parilla Restaurante for letting us invade for dinner on Saturday.

Picture perfect weather, good eats, plenty of wind and a fantastic group made for a great weekend.

Kudos for Chris for organizing the whole thing! I'm so fired up about racing I'm heading down to Ft. Walton this weekend!

My apologies to for causing the wreck in turn 1 of the second race on Sunday. Especially to Joe Quigley, who likely would have placed second rather than third. I still feel bad about that.

I might have even been second myself if I just hadn’t tacked at the wrong place and time. On the bright side, it allowed Jennifer Quigley to get by and beat me to the finish. Go Jennifer… Bill H.
