Cape San Blas Sailing Report

Cape San Blas Sailing Report May 13 to 20, 2007

Arrived with the family, two jet skis and windsurfing gear on Sunday. Had to travel through smoke a lot of the way down but CSB was not affected by smoke.
Sunday – calm no surf and wind 5-10 no sailing.
Monday – East wind 20 -25 great sailing in the bay Drew and I both on 6.6
Tuesday – was 10 – 20 east Drew and I sailed 8.0 and 7.5. Had to take a mandatory break when I saw an 8 foot shark out by the sand bar we were using for our jibe spot. We are trying a new trick. I am sure you have seen people in the mags sail side by side and one person puts his front foot on the other board. We’re close to having it down. We will do it next time at Lanier (probably fall ) otherwise we will practice it a little more in Bonaire.
Wednesday – took jet skis to the northern most point of CSB looking out over Mexico beach. Fantastic place to eat lunch and hang. Distance from the park to the north point is 16 miles of undeveloped beach front. The call for wind on this day was 5 – 10 but it ended up being 10 – 15. Sailed 8.0 for about 1.5 hrs. Drew now has a blister on his hand and says he won’t sail anymore so the blister can heal for Bonaire. Dinner at Papa Joes in Apalachicola – good food – place is right on the water.
Thursday call is 10 – 20 N after a front moves through. Rigged an 8.0 in the afternoon and then rigged my 6.6 ( btw I only brought an 8.0 and a 6.6 ) Sailed in the Gulf. It was rough seemed like the waves were about 4’. Bay sailing is so much easier than the rough gulf.
Friday call is 10 -20 but by 10 am it was 15 to 20 – sailed 8.0 then sailed 6.6. Sailed early and avoided the rough seas. Dinner at Loggerheads on CSB. This place is real close to our house. It is the same place we have eaten at in the past when we used to do abc windsurfing road trips. Good food – not on the water but close to the house. The other place we went to in Appilacacola was 40 minutes in one direction.
Saturday call is again 10 -20 but more like 15 – 20 was what really happened. Sailed 6.6 in the bay while everyone else did the skis.
It is funny how the jet skis have trouble keeping up with the windsurfer. The windsurfer is smooth the jet ski gets slammed by the waves.
Sunday – cleaned the jet skis and washed the windsurf gear and headed home.
As for wind, it was windy every day but no 5.5 or 5.0 stuff. I guess we will wait for that when Drew and I go to Bonaire in three weeks from now.

I have some great pictures but I don’t know how to post them.

Next stop Bonaire June 9 to 16

There's no doubt I lucked up. It might have been 8.0 and 6.6 but it was every day. In fact, everyone else wanted the wind to stop. Plus the jet skis like calm water not chop.

I rented a 5 bedroom beach front home from Paradise Realty. The house was on Cape San Blas Rd about 1 mile from St. Joe Park

I stayed there last year in one of those huge houses about a mile from the park a few weeks earlier than this in the year. The wind blew all week and the weather was cool/dry. I sailed some in the park in the bay side and kayaked, it is a great place to go, and the beaches were always empty.
