Finally, a kite where you can "sheet out". Would love to see if the reality matches the hype.

I have been riding the Crossbow 12 for a couple a week or so now.
It definitely delivers what is promises, massive windrange, turning speed, and safety. It will relaunch quickly and easily every single time. I don't want to go back to riding a regular C-shaped kite.

Tim, Does your 12 work in 10 to 20? Where do you launch from? Is it possible to stay upwind with a 12? Where did you but the Crossbow? Thanks

For me the Xbow 12 works from 10kts on a skim or surfboard all the way to 30kts on a kiteboard. It goes upwind better than any 12 I have flown, mostly because you are never overpowered even in gusts.
I ride at all the launches around Tybee. We stock all sizes of them at HighTide on Tybee http://hightidesurfshop.com

I've spent a lot of time on these kites now, so what ever questions you might have about them I'd be glad to answer. It seems to me that if you are trying to ride on a gusty lake, it's the only kite for the job at this point.

I am torn between the 12 and the 16. the wind here is light when its on its gusty It has blown from the normal 10 to 15 , to 15 to 20 . sometimes 10 to 20 up and down all day with gusts to 25 we dont see too many days above that and when we do I cant always get away. I would have to say I will be in a wind range of 12 to 18 is this a 16Xbow? I dont want to be wishing for more kite ,since they art touted to be easily depowered I think the 16 is the one . what are your thoughts and I have e-mailed you with my address ,couldnt find your prices. thanks

I think there are several points you must know before you think of kiteboarding on the lake.
First its impossible to kitesurf -on the lake- with one kite only , 12 or 16. The conditions on the lake are totally different than on the beach I was kitesurfing for about a year and a half before i came here more than a year ago, mainly the gusting wind and wind shades created by the trees and land elevation ....etc in addition to the very limited launching sites.
In my opinion you should never buy a new kite, first you will pay the full retail price and then one mistake and your new kite will be history !
I might sound a bit pestimistic but its only the truth.
Similar to windsurfing you will definately make mistakes when you start, If you will only use it on the beach it would be great But here you can't even land you kite because the trees are everywhere.
we alway do a water landing and even then the space is very limited.
I think that its best that you buy a used Rhino 04 12M which we use the most on the lake. it has a wide range of wind, that way you won't spend so much and also if you find out that it not worth kiting on the lake or if you trash the kite you still havent lost alot.
I have Seven kites all infaltible and there are day that the wind is so varialbe with all our expireince we end up in very bad situations.
I highly encourage you to learn kitesurfing and if you thinkg that the crossbow is the best for you, I would definaltely get the 12 M , the best times that we have had on the lake were all when the wind was 15 and above. plus if you make mistakes its more forgiving than a 16M .

Tim,

Glad to hear you're having fun with kiting down there in Hilton Head. Thanks for the recommendation. The Xbow is getting lots of great press on kiteforum but it's good to hear from someone you know.

What C shaped kites did you fly before the Xbow?

I'm also curious about how much you're windsurfing vs. kiting now that you have nice beaches and constant wind? Smile

We're finally getting much better up here on the lake. Athens park has made a world of difference. The Rhino4's upwind capabilities have helped as well.

Best regards,
Mel

I'm on Tybee Island, been kiting for 6 years, never windsurfed.

Before the Crossbow, I flew Wipika, Naish, Slingshot, Best, and regular Cabrinhas.

One thing I can say for sure is that the Xbow has way more range than any C-shape kite on the market. It cover the range of 2-3 kite depending on your skill level, making it less expensive It goes upwind better than a regular C-shaped kite considering you can carry more power without losing an edge.

I find most damage happens to kites when:

A. You get overpowered on the kite and have to let it go to the leash. or
B. When you crash your kite and are unable to relaunch.

The Crossbow solves both these problems, You are simply in more control.

Another thing we noted recently is the Crossbow's resistence to luff. The other day we ran towards the kite on the beach and couldn't make it luff. It's really stable.

Don't take my word for it, there a few Crossbows in the lineup here on Tybee, come see it for yourself. It's not a perfect kite, but it's clearly a big step in the right direction.
