Gene and I show up at Van Pugh and look around in amazement. Ten vehicles in the parking lot and no one to be seen plus no one on the water. What’s going on? We comment to ourselves a few times about how strange this all is. After walking the boundary of the park we notice that there are these people and sea gulls over on BOZO ISLAND.
There they are. All of them. David D., Tim, Barrett, Jamie, Scott, Chris P & Chris V. We cannot believe our eyes. We continue to watch. They are milling around with their boards and rigs pulled up on the island. As we are watching, they all pick up their stuff and enter the water. They try to beach start but to no avail. They try to water start with absolutely no luck whatsoever. All seven of them begin to swim their boards over to the Van Pugh swim area. They try up hauling – they try everything. They finally give up and just swim.
Well, Gene and I just sat down and watched the show. We shared a Pepsi One and told a few jokes, like the one about Micheal Jackson and his hand. We walked around for a while all the time watching this crew swim their rigs and boards over from BOZO ISLAND. Gene asked me if I had lunch and I said, “Yes”.
We just wait, wait, wait while these windsurfers swam their boards in. They must have been in the cold water for at least an hour. Once they got within yelling distance we started to talk to them. It seems that they had not properly judged the wind and all had gone out on sails that were too large for the current conditions. Well, it was blowing 20 to 45. It seems like they would have learned about that by now. Anyway, Gene and I paddle out and help out in the rescue.
Boy did they look beat when they came back to shore.
And, I have pictures to prove it.
I don't know if this is a true story or not, but if so, I don't feel so bad about about my less than stellar performance today at Galts on a borrowed 4.0 sail. Of course, we only had to deal with 21 gusting to 34  (I measured it standing in the water).
But it was sort of fun in a sick sort of way.
How about it Gene - did this really happen? :?:

Since there are actually pictures and I'm sure Barrett is going to post them, I guess I should tell you IT IS ALL TRUE.
Well it is if you change the names around.
It wasnt my first visit to Bozo Island and probably wont be the last, but I hadnt been there in awhile. So I decided to visit it today, and David Wade was nice enough to join me. My 6.0 and David's 5.5 turned out to be alittle big. See David D's post about how hard it blew.
And that's all I've got to say about it except DAVID DELOZIER IS AN ANIMAL, and tomorow is another day (and it's supposed to blow.)

Gene,
Perhaps you should come out to Galts, so that you can improve your skills enough to sail with the Big Kids at Lanier. (But please don't bring David Wade, he seems to be a jinx.)

I'm not sure if the dark cloud following me around is because of David W being present or it's just me, but Sat while trying to sail at the Lake Lanier Sailing club, (thanks Chris V for getting everyone in), as soon as I get out, I break my boom. I'm glad I'm getting all this bad luck out of the way at one time.
I dont think I'll sail today (Sun) even if it blows.

Gene,
Maybe its YOU that is jinxed. On second thought, I'm cancelling your invitation to Galts.

Slolom does indicate "down hill" doesn't it? I also got swept very close to Bozo island & swam ~ 80% of the way back. I was not cold, I was working very hard - thanks to Tim for suggesting the hood. After that some of us were standing at the point of Van Pugh (where surfable lefts were breaking) and it was gusting to well over 30 ( 40?!) and the Chris's gracefully launched and sailed right out into it - Very impressive. It is very cool to have the gang there - especially on the bigger days. Everyone is looking out for eachother and the attitude (see Tim's bumber sticker) is greatly improved - the most experienced sailors take the lake's punishment in stride. Friday was great, but entirely because of the ABC members.
"...and the Chris's gracefully launched and sailed right out into it - Very impressive."
Richard- You must surely be referring to "Twinkletoes Pyron' not "Two-leff-foots Voith" -- I was getting totally hammered on Friday... it was u-g-l-y (but fun) from where I stood/swum. I'd say Chris P. & David D. were the ironpersons. Let's do it again soon!

I think the next time the ironpersons club meets I am going to take pictures where it is safe and warm on shore.
Chris - "Twinkletoes" was looking very good - but you did not go to Bozo yourself - that's my goal
