Barrett's Outer Banks Report

The stats:

22 days in Nags Head
Days sailed - 13
Days with shorty or no wetsuit - 10

We're back from three wonderful weeks in Nags Head on the Outer Banks. Unlike the spring when it blew almost every day for a month, there were many sunny & warm, but windless days at the beginning of the stay. In response, I rented a Stand Up Paddle-board and bought a 2nd boogie board with fins so my wife and I could ride the waves together. We took turns with the SUP in the sound and the ocean. When the waves were too big for the SUP we switched to the Boogie boards. Even though the new toys were fun, when the wind came up, we immediately ditched them in favor of windsurfing.

Most of the wind came the last week, and we stayed an extra day because the sailing was so good at the end. On Sunday, the day of the Atlanta Regatta, a Nor'easter brought gale-force winds so strong I was blown off the water until a brief session at the end of the day. On Monday, our last day, conditions were perfect, with side-onshore wind & sunny skies. Twenty windsurfers and a few kiters arrived from Ontario, so we had lots of folks to sail with before packing up.

In the Spring we will be going to a new house. Randy joined us for week #2 in Nags Head and saw the new location. It was a challenge to find a house as good as the one we've been in, but the new one has some advantages such as a big-screen HDTV in the living room, good access to the water with a sandy beach, and excellent sail storage.
