Anybody willing to help a newbie out?

Hello,

I am a new windsurfer, having done it only while on vacation. I bought a used Mistral Superlight with several sails and would like to come up to Lake Lanier when others will be out and perhaps willing to give advice/guidance on rigging the board and sailing technique. If the weather is good this weekend, I'll likely be trying to get out there then.

Thanks,
Nicholas

Nicholas,

We are all a very friendly group and will be more than happy to help out.

Usually someone posts here (in the forum) when they are heading out and where they are going. We usually go to Van Pugh because of the wind direction but it is not the friendliest of places to learn to windsurf due to boat traffic and the chop they generate.

Either way - come join us next time it's windy.

Albert

Nicholas - you are facing several challenges. As Albert said, you come out when other windsurfers are out, you are sure to get help and advice - the big problem here is that on a light wind summer weekend, windsurfers, especially more advanced sailors, can be very scarce. Main reasons why are because the weekend boat traffic on Lanier ( and Allatoona) create a chop environment that most sailors find more challenging and less rewarding; and most advanced sailors are seeking stronger than average wind conditions. Also there is the problem of crowds and finding a parking place. If you go to any of the major parks, best bet is to go early, or go late. Much , much better still, if at all possible is to go during the week. On the other hand, if you " wait til it blows" ,#1 - you could have a long wait , & #2 - You may very well be overmatched skillwise. Since I don't really know, my surmise of your skill level here is just a wild guess. For most beginners a lesson or two and a fair amount of time on the water in relatively light wind are essential parts of the learning process. For a chop free environment, you might check out Lake Julliette or Lake Acworth. If you are interested in lessons, I can provide. If you aquired an original Superlight, congrats, that's a favorite board of mine. In any case, welcome aboard. ChrisP. 404-525-7190.
