Almost Live Van Pugh Update Friday 10/08

Van Pugh, 10 am, Friday, some caps (in the gusts), wind out of the east, pertty day, no sailors. Keep in mind, east wind sometimes shut down at noon.

I'm not planning on sailing today, as I'm packing to leave for Hatteras this afternoon or tomorrow morning.

This update brought to you by Gene's Consignment Shop which will be closed for the next two weeks. http://www.expage.com/genesconsignment/

Sailed 7.2 at Tidwell, starting a t 9am. For the first hour, it was perfectly powered, and very nice. The wind picked up and for the next hour, I was becming overpowered, but it was still managable. It continued to build, and I took a break. Around 11, I measured 18-19.6 and decided to wait for it to drop (7.2 was my smallest sail, had I brought my 5.8, it probably would have been fine.) It dropped a little and I sailed some more. When I quit around noon, I measured 13-16.6.

I've noticed lately the forecast models are really not doing their job. Both today, and wed were very nice 7.2 days, and the models never showed anything over about 6-8 kt. The various WC and local forecasts were calling 4-8 or 5-10, and it was a lot better than that. The hourly forecast on weather.com did some winds in the 10-13 mph ranges, so that's why I decided to go out. I would think Sat. might possibly be another day worth watching carefully.

This time of year when the water is warm, and the morning temps low does seem to lend itself to some nice easterlies, but you do have to get there early.
