LLSC Reggae Regatta Lake Lanier Sailing Club June 7-9, 2024

Anyone planning to enter? I’d like to try out my new knee if there are other windsurfers there.

I think Chris and I are likely if he isn't traveling. Also Haizar and Channey could be talked into it. Maybe Langdon and Eric, too, if family commitments allow.

I was already considering it. Just upped to full LLSC membership. Biggrin

Congrats on the new knee. How much did it weigh at delivery and have you named it yet?

John - Glad to read your new knee is getting you back out windsurfing. I hope to see you at the Sailing Club if there's wind.

We found some today. Three good races and then the wind went psychotic. Everybody else did well and things were pretty evenly matched overall.. I sucked as usual but fun to work on a different set of skills. We were prepared for the worst and glad we took the chance to rig up and go out.

Re: LLSC Reggae Regatta Lake Lanier Sailing Club June 7-9, 2024

Really nice day yesterday. Got off five races (if memory serves). I longoboarded the first race as the wind started coming up. Did a nice planing downwind run, blew up and still able to finish close to the better guys. Rushed in to rig my foil sail was able to foil two races, tried the last two (wind faded). With a stronger breeze, Chris was able to pull away from Steve who was sailing fast despite being on a smaller sail and an original Mistral Superlight. John kept things close but was happy just being out since this was his first weekend out on the water since a knee replacement. Haizar continues to show improvement and he'll be looking good by the Fall Classic.

After the races were over (like literally as the barge was pulling anchor), the wind filled in pretty hard. I was still on my foil race gear and was able to blast upwind into the channel which was a BIG mistake. Within two minutes, I was shouting expletives at boaters and dealing with wicked boat wake so decided to blast back down. A bunch of non-racers showed up: Barrett, JB and Langdon. It was a very lovely afternoon. Someone on the beach was taken by us having fun that Chris was able to give them an on the spot lesson to continue their stoke. Also talked to a guy who's a big wake foiler and I think he's going to be joining the wing crew pretty soon.

By having five entrants, we got our own start at the regatta so a big thanks to everyone who signed up. It makes a huge difference instead of trying to start with a bunch of boats that have big wind shadows and handle differently than us. It's also a big deal for the club to have enough to make a fleet as it raises our profile amongst other sailors. Our big thanks to John who got the ball rolling and Steve who came from out of town.

As a guy who absolutely sucks at longboards - it is fun. I know that I'm the first one to hop on a foil when the wind kicks up but having a longboard means going out and having a blast with your pals. It's not about the results - it's about the company. I hope that some of you who have been shy about sticking a toe in the water come on out at the Fall Classic and give it a go.

At the boat that ran along side and then cut about 50 ft in front of me... yes. I was not happy about on a number of levels. Not that they could hear me.

I put my happy face back on when I came back in the bay.

The increased presence of sailboarders at LLSC has generated a lot of conversation with the other members. There is much potential to increase the numbers of boards there. Chris and some others have offered lessons at different levels. I hope you keep doing that.

With a certain wind direction on SSI, I would launch off a dock at a marina on the west side. Has anyone ever tried to launch off the dock at the clubhouse to avoid the wind shadow?

That's an interesting idea. We've certainly rescued someone from there before. Do you mean actually launching off the dock proper or just by the shore right there? A drawback that comes to mind from having to launch from a dock/swim platform at the Rudder Club is getting foil gear on and off the dock especially with water over chest deep. The wind shadow is bad for teaching on a NW but we can always nip around to Old Fed Day Use if it's just for an individual. This time of year, it seems W and SW are much more common and certainly work better. All the same, I certainly will take another look. With foilboards, though, floating out through the wind shadow isn't that big of a deal even if I'm using my smaller (120l.) higher wind board.

I'm pleased that you posted with no mention of my big blow up Friday right in front of you. I guess that means the check cleared? Lol It was certainly fun to play chase with you guys even though in that lighter downwind run, you walked away from me. As for Sunday, the sooner the rest of the A-Cat fleet arranges for Bailey's boat to be shipped off, the better for you all. But, you all certainly put on an excellent show and showing. It was very nice that two of the biggest non keelboat fleets were cats and boards - I guess the conditions certainly encouraged it. It certainly made the bay a small place when the wind picked up.

Re: LLSC Reggae Regatta Lake Lanier Sailing Club June 7-9, 2024

On SW-W winds, I'd rig in the grass at the marina, carry the rig to the end of the dock, throw it in, and then jump in after it. Coming in, just slow up before you hit the dock, disconnect the rig, then pull everything up. On SSI, we'd get these 30-35k SW. There was almost a mile stretch of the river that was 90 degrees to that. You can get up next to the marsh and have 1" waves. So the dock launches were worth the effort.

Check did clear.

It was very interesting seeing that many boards and cats out in a club race.
