Gilmer is not showing much, but U. N GA Cumming is showing quite a bit of wind. Anybody know anything about this site? It is easier to imagine circumstances that make wind reading too low (wind shadow) than too high, though I suppose anything is possible.
VP 1pm live: sunny, nice breeze, decent white caps mid channel and on, flat water, empty lake. Looks like makings of a perfect 6ish sail plus foil day!!
Based on that report it seems the UNGC spot is more accurate than Gilmer. Next time I got to Tidwell I will try to check it out because it is just off Pilgrim Mill Rd on the other side of 400, Of course it could be on top of a building on top of hill or something.

Looks like it's probably on this building which is also on a hill. If anything, it will overstate the wind a bit on the surface, especially in the next couple of months if we have dome conditions. All the same, it's great if it's decently set up to give us a reading further south and west of Gilmer. If they both read well, gives a higher confidence. We'll just have to learn to calibrate it for the conditions. There does seem to be a rise to the north which will shadow readings from there.
Edit: mystery solved. found its website and they even have a "cloud cam" on the meter http://forsyth-ga.weatherstem.com/cumming There's also a station at UNGA in Oakwood but it's not well placed so reading much lower. Their cloud cam shows the station is below treetop level
It does seem it would be useful to look at. For one thing - if nothing else if this station could verify the null hypothesis (the wind sucks.) If the wind sucks at the top of a building on top of a hill we probably can forget about the lake being any good. The elevation seems comparable to Gilmer though it may not have any wind shadowed direction. Can't hurt to have more data.
I'm thinking a delegation of Applied Weather Scientist (which several of us could try to fake) might convince them their station would be more useful if planted on an island in the middle of the lake somewhere. Dr. Webguy, Dr. Mathis, Dr. Hamdi who's up for trying to meet with them?

I foiled briefly with great wind, then quickly became overpowered with my 6.7m sail & Moses 1100 foil. I switched to windsurfing & stayed on a full plane with my 120L board. Rhett handled the whole wind range with his Moses high-aspect foil.

Sorry about that, but thought your post let everyone know you foiled.
Sailors - Hamdi, Rhett, Barrett, Chris P, Langdon, and Me. Anyone else?

google street view with ridiculously long url
Edit: Looking at the Lake Lanier GIS map, it appears that the building sits at least at 1200ft plus is probably about 50 ft high which puts the reading about 200 ft higher than the lake surface. Gilmer is listed at 1250 by the NWS. Lanier full pool is 1071 https://cesamusace.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=b7ec0d32c7814763a8ac464d24419741

Decent afternoon on the foil. Glad the sun was out.
Maybe Sunday will be good also

Barrett
Chris P and I also foiled, total of 6 of us, nice day, sunny and fairly warm (low 50s?)
Sunday, Monday and TUESDAY look good but may be raining on Monday. Always subject to change.

As usual, I am the least memorable of all attendees ?
