General Information

Oak Island is "a great place to sail, and only 37 minutes from N.Myrtle Beach! The launch is called the Oak Island "Point" and is on the far west side of the island. It is soooo sweet on a Westerly and, would probably work on an Easterly or South Easterly too.

Parking access is good there too."

Doug King via the Augusta-Columbia Windsurfing Association Yahoo Grouplist

Oak Island is also close to Wilmington, Cape Fear and Wrightsville Beach which also have good spots to windsurf and kite (and surf). Spring and summer breezes in the area tend to be southerly (SW, S, SE). Somewhat surprisingly, this part of the NC coast runs east/west as it is tucked under and to the west of Cape Fear.

Local Tips

This is an ocean launch. Take appropriate precautions especially in offshore winds.

Doug, again: "An interesting feature of this launch is the nearby inlet. This inlet has an associated sand bar which breaks up the side shore current a bit and offers some interesting bumps. Just gotta be wary of dragging the fin."
