Windsurfing and Kiteboarding at Sunrise Cove

General Information

This is a good (for Lanier) sandy beach and pretty shallow for beginners. But like all of Lanier, beware of dropoffs. Really works well on SW wind. Preferable to parks to the south in the busy months because it's less crowded. Note the closing time for the gate which is generally 5-6 pm. Yes, they do close the gate and lock it.

Good spot for picnics. Has Port-a-Johns.

NE winds can be sailed off the backside by the boat launch. Not the best place for NE, you'd be better off driving around to Vann's Tavern

Legacy Directions

1 hr. N I-85 to N I-985 to Exit 16. Left on Mundy Mill (GA 53). In about two miles, road will seem to end into McEver (it actually becomes a lane past the light. Turn left on McEver. At second light turn right on Flat Creek Rd. Go about two miles passing one 4way stop. As road appears to end at gate to Marina turn right just befor gate into public day use area. Park near Portajons at bottom of the hill.

Local Tips

Be aware of the reef markers to the right and left of the beach. It really does get shallow. The marker on the right marks a ridge that extends out from the beach and is uniformly shallow all the way out.

Wind Shadows

Slight shadow on NW.

Sailing Upwind

If you sail upwind on W or NW, you then can run down the lake towards Vann's Tavern or Van Pugh. Makes for a nice excursion and departure from the old back and forth.
