Windsurfing and Kiteboarding at Galts Ferry Park

General Information

50 min. If guard station isn't open, turn left just before guard station and park on right and far right sides of the lot depending on launch choice. Because of the surrounding mountains, locals say this place rips on an East wind. For the big fall and spring westerlies, even those who live on Allattoona make the trip over to Van Pugh on Lake Lanier.

In the last several years, the parking area by the lake has been closed during the winter from about Dec 1 to March 1. The boat launch is still open but is severely wind shadowed on any wind from the east. Additionally, the lake level is significantly lower in the winter so you'll be having to walk further out to launch and be subject to additional underwater hazards.

Wind Shadows

The wind shadows from the unfavored directions are substantial. As well, terrain to the west of Galt's is fairly mountainous and while a breeze will sneak in from that direction, if you are wanting the most wind for the conditions, you'll need to go elsewhere. On the other hand, Galt's is so close for those in Cobb and surrounding counties, there are those willing to trade wind strength for time on the water.
