Tybee Island

General Information

Windlord gave us this info: I’ve sailed off Tybee Island a few times. Be careful about parking though. You have to pay or you will get ticketed. I also bought a cheap hose sprayer to rinse sand off my equipment.

  1. Tybee Creek on the West side at the boat ramp on Alley Street. I worried a bit about gators but then there were dolphins swimming there.
  2. Polk Street Access on North side. Long walk. Sort of protected from the ocean. Parked near water treatment plant.
  3. Southernmost point. Parked on 19th street and walked gear over the dunes either to Tybee Creek side or Ocean side. Beware of tidal current! I lost a hat out to sea there.
  4. Beach side off 2nd Ave. Parked past Sugar Shack. I walked over the dune bridge and rigged on the beach, carried sail back and derigged by the car.
  5. Fort Screven Beach. Looong walk to beach.

You can also check for advice at High Tide Surf shop. It's on the right just after you get in to Tybee. Source

Chris Voith also recommends "Go to AJ's when done sailing for sunsets and libations. "

1996 Atlanta Olympics

Tybee Island was the venue for the sailing events in the 1996 Olympic Games. Several club members competed in the Mistral One Design (IMCO) trials and a number of national and international competitors participated in the 1996 Inland Windsurfing Regatta as a tuneup.
