Windfest or Shell Point regatta

Weather permitting... what is the best call?  Wind Fest 2002 on the Outer Banks of NC for 3 days of sailing, demos, smoozing, and a beverage or 20.....  or the Stephen C. Smith Regatta down at Shell Point for 2 days of sailing competetion, smoozing, and a beverage or 20?  Have been to both, but the decision is killing me right now.  700+ miles to SPSC, or 1000+ to Hatteras.  I'll stop in Cartersville this weekend, PRAYING FOR WIND - FOR ALL OF US!  Love the website, the club, and the Senior Nationals....  keep up the great work!

Re: Windfest or Shell Point regatta

I'm partial to Hatteras myself but if you are into the competition and beverages, it makes sense to save 300 miles and head for Shell Point.

You can either a) sail a bit or b) quaff a bit
with the extra 4-5 hrs you aren't sitting in a car seat.

OTOH, if you want to make a longer trip out of it, Hatteras is... well, Hatteras.  Weather permitting?  That means a few days of 5.3-4.7 until your hands are blistered and bleeding.  Then you duck tape them up and do it some more...
And if the weather doesn't permit, you get to look at the toys.

The tie-breaker?  Those long miles from I-95 eastwards.  Can you do it without going nuts?

Re: Windfest or Shell Point regatta

Elected to go to Windfest 2002 on the NC Outer Banks.  The drive was loong and boring - especially on the way back.  The wind was decent 7.0 Thur / 5.0 Fri / 6.0 Sat.  Good times... good folks.  You meet the nicest on a Honda... err,  I mean a sailboard!
PS. Looks like Lake Lanier has filled up quite a bit since last year.   Good wind and sailing to all the fine folks in and around Hot Lanta.
