was surprised the crane wasn't taken with it. too bad on the damage, and a real shame for the racing. Another day like Saturday's racing would have been fun to watch

That is terrible - I wonder how much notice they had. Seems similar to kiting and dodging squalls / thunderstorms. You need to keep your eyes open and run for cover quickly when given the chance. I had a close call at Huguenot once where I made the right choice while kiting my 16 m - I got it de-rigged just in time as the sky turned black and wind became strong off-shore.
