Good points. Hatteras has very shallow water so the temp can change pretty quickly. After a few cold days, it can be pretty cold, while a few warm days will warm it up a lot. Much different from lakes, like Lanier, where it takes several weeks of warm weather to take us from winter to spring time temps.

What happens in a black hole stays in a black hole.
We're sailing this afternoon on the Outer Banks without wetsuits, but as Randy said, a cold front can drop the water temp. in a couple of days, so I would bring one. I'll take the water temperature and report back this evening.
The water temperature in Roanoke Sound at Nags Head is 76F. However, if you are staying farther south on the Outer Banks, the water will be colder and you will need a wetsuit.
I have a subscription to iWindsurf with two gages reporting a water temp. of 71F in Pamlico Sound at Avon and Ocracoke. I believe that Roanoke Sound is warmer because the water is more shallow and has less direct connection to the cold ocean.
Thanks for the update. Yeah, we're staying just south of Avon so it looks like it'll be on the cold side...
BTW, is there a campground and an outfitter in Nags Head you'd recommend? I've used Ride Hatteras Surf Shop in Avon before and they was great so going with them again...
Avon is the place for camping and gear rental in one location. Ocean Air Sports rents windsurfing gear in Avon and the owner has been very helpful to us here in Nags Head. Phone (252) 995-5000. A cold front came through today dropping the temp. from 80 to 60F. Adam (from Atlanta) is going out as I write at 6PM in a full wetsuit. Tomorrow is forecast to be 80F & sunny, so bring all your gear.
The first rule for Hatteras is BRING EVERYTHING! Conditions change fast there. You could be in a swimsuit one day and a full-suit the next.
