Vann's Sunday 12-13

Unusual SE wind. Keep you calendars open, do you chores early.

Monday looks good, too, but a tough day for the proletariat.

A couple of months old but still appears relevant:

Just checked the forecast, looks like Sunday has been pushed back some. But, dont panic, it's always subject to change. I still hope to do something Sunday and Monday.

Yeah - Sunday is starting to look more like Monday as we get closer to it. Will Monday become Tuesday? Seems like we are in a bit of wind funk at the moment. Kind of like the Falcons losing streak. Still, I like our odds better than theirs for Sunday.

Whenever I feel bad about how un-windy Atlanta is, I just think it could be worse - I could be a Falcons fan.

Still will be up in Gainesville tomorrow if it decides to blow in the afternoon. Otherwise, it's yardwork.

btw, sad day at Tidwell

Quote:
CUMMING – A longtime member and activist of the Forsyth County Republican Party was found dead in her car that was submerged in Lake Lanier Saturday, officials said.

Reva Jennings, 77, of Cumming, was pronounced deceased due to suspected drowning on Dec. 12 after units from the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office and Fire Department dive team recovered her vehicle at Tidwell Park, which is operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers east of Cumming.

According to Forsyth County Fire Division Chief Jason Shivers, foul play is not suspected. Early evidence suggests she may have driven into the water due to heavy fog in the area.

According to Forsyth County Sheriff’s Cpl. Robin Regan, the silver Toyota Camry was observed by a passerby just before 11 a.m. and was “completely underwater at the end of the boat ramp.”

Officials believe the incident occurred after 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, Regan said.

According to Jennings's social media accounts, she attended a Forsyth County GOP Christmas party Friday night.

Pilgrim Mill Road ends in the boat ramp to the lake in Tidwell Park.

Regan said she was the only occupant and was the registered owner of the vehicle.

The park was closed while units remained on scene Saturday. The case remains under investigation.

This is at least the second time a car has ended in the water at Tidwell. Once several years ago I went there to sail and there were police cars and a tow truck. Turned out a young dirver had ended up in the lake off the boat ramp. Apparently he got out unharmed. I don't see anything particularly dangerous about that boat ramp that would cause people to drive into it by mistake.

The wind never came up. The driveway is free of leaves at least. Looks like Allatoona might have gotten wind.

Still, a better day than the Falcons had. (Arthur looks dismayed by the forecast for the next several days.)

There was some wind, enough to shoot this Cat Kite Video, our recently longstanding tradition of dealing with skunks. I guess after doing all this "heavy lifting" the wind decided to take the afternoon off, but at least it was kind enough to wait until I donned my wetsuit. Nevermind - I joined the SUPeeps, who were not disappointed in the least to see that the wind had deserted me. Well, as said above - I still had a lot better day than the Falcons. And I did get to test the lastest thing hot off of my sewing machine.

speaking of kite cats:

If I lost mobility, that would look like a cool option, better than a hot-rodded Rascal scooter.

He also made a kiteboat, which seems to work pretty well with a "kite on a stick" approach. (Of course, kite on a stick seems a lot like a sail.) I don't think they make either one of those anymore. The kite cat would suffer from the same issue kitesurfing in Atlanta - lack of suitable launches. Given its size, I really don't see how you could launch the kite anywhere on Lanier. At Toona in the winter it might work.

BTW - I saw a new method of paddleboarding yesterday at the lake. Looks like self rescue to me - but the lady paddling was a lot faster than me. When I saw the board she was using, I started to think I shouldn't have sold my Serenity......Go to 14 seconds in an you can see pretty much what I saw, though there does seem to be a lot of ways of doing this.

So... instead of Stand Up Paddleboarding, we have Lie On Your Face Paddleboarding? IOne of the great appeals of SUP was the ability to look around from a higher vantage point which is why SUP > kayak for a lot of people. That may be faster but it seems like somebody forgot their paddle and decided to justify it with a "new" board.

Plus, it makes my back hurt just looking at that two-handed stroke.

However, I'm never one to suggest that consenting adults shouldn't be allowed their fun.

Re: Vann's Sunday 12-13

I tried it. Seems pretty efficient, even though I had no real idea of how to do it right. From the few times I've tried it, swimming with those giant duck feet (for lack of a better term) seems way faster. I'm thinking someone could make something like that for your hands for LFOYF paddling.

Anyway - seems like it would have a big advantage for upwind, during the times when we have wind....
