As far as sailing at Tybee, there is not much to it. Find a the beach and launch -- you won't see any other windsufers. I have sailed there several times in good wind (5.5m and below), and I have never seen any. I talked to a local kitesurfer when I was there last time, and they don't ever remember seeing any windsurfing going on at all.

It would be nice to have more sailors showing up down there -- I hate sailing in the ocean by myself!

I sailed Tybee several times, but last time is about 4-5 years ago. Two young ones tend to cut down on crazy road trips. I really liked sailing there, but the beach is not as nice as Cape San Blass where we tend to go at least once a year for a camping / beach fix. Having said this, I'll be interested in driving to Tybee (even for one day) if, big IF, the forecast is solid.

Thanks for the info Nitrojiber and Marek. I think I will try the south end . I saw a parking area with not too far of a walk to the shore the last time I was down there.

Tybee Spot

I sailed right at the beach pavilion (shout end at Parking lot). I know that there is a good spot on the north side as well (maybe a bit more protected), but I have not tried it.

Here's a website which although it's for kiteboarding, might help with lauch sites, general conditions, wind directions, etc. at Tybee -

As far as sailing at tybee..there are two spots to go that i have seen other windsurfers sail at. Just north of the pier (as someone mentioned) and then on the back side off chatham ave is like a big lake..it's were the river starts and is flat and nice.
Just and FYI for anyone considering tybee..it is the closest beach to atlanta..it's only 4 hours to Savannah and maybe another 20 min out to tybee..and actually tybee is a lot nicer than it used to be a few years ago.
Hope to see some of you down here! Definitely call me if anyone goes down!...i guess all the people that used to windsurf down there are now kiteboarding..but i do see an occasional sail out there.

Looks like alot of people are interested in Tybee, and maybe a club roadtrip is in the makeing, we can all stay at Kelli's, (just kidding Kelli). Maybe we could put together a long weekend club road trip, after the midwinters (early march) but before the Hatteras trip (late April) say in late march, early april. Hopefully it wouldnt be too cold, and it would be windy, we could watch the forecast and only go if it was good, and maybe we could camp (there use to be a campground close to the lighthouse which was nice if it hasnt been turned into condos). Just an idea. ROADTRIP!

Kelli, I have a lot on Polk street and will be building there in a few years. My Dad also has a house on 10th and Jones that we go to at least every other month. Every time we come down to the beach we bring our gear and usually sail off the 10th street beach, on the back river by Little Tybee or just off Polk Street. We will probably be down in a few weeks and I'll give you an email to let you know when we come down. I also know a couple of other people there that windsurf.
