Re: Tues, Wed, Thurs mid 50s

Now that I'm a bit better rested some reflections on yesterday.
1- Broyles Rec Area was a real nice launch. Looks like it should work well from NE round to SW. Grassy rigging area and small sandy beach reminiscent of Old Fed. Parking for the close spots are somewhat limited so get there early on weekends in good weather. It's almost two miles across the lake to the Western Carolina Sailing Club so you have plenty of room. The only boat traffic was the occasional fishing boat and one sailboat motoring. Mind the land mines, though. Their geese have four legs and bark.

Time up there from my house was 1:45 or about 45 longer than the drive to Van Pugh. The park is about 3 min off the interstate so easy-peasy drive.

I mention the following two things not because of my elegance yesterday (I did forty of the ugliest jibes on record) but that it was fantastic to keep on going and not to have to pump back on the foil on each turn. If you are tired of my prattling about the topic, stop now.

2 - Had a lot of success with some pretty light air jibes. Figured out to really accentuate the rig movement from the inside to the outside of the turn. Start the turn by looking through the main panel of your exit and then swing the rig across the body. If you are on port - wind coming over left shoulder - you should go from the left arm being opposite the right shoulder to the right arm being opposite of the left shoulder. Also, bend the knees, stay forward and keep a very straight and extended arms. The extended front arm keeps you forward and the board level while the extended back arm keeps the sail open. Did a bunch of jibes without a white cap and diid not get backwinded once.

Check out this video at about 1:15 https://www.facebook.com/100002776751259/videos/pcb.3646672912124115/676735423474287

I think a lot of us see jibes in videos on the internet and quite often they are smaller sails in higher winds. In those conditions, the rig sweep isn't quite as important and it's misleading to translate that into the very common lighter conditions we have when sailing with our biggest sails.

Also, be super choosy about where you jibe - plan your spot even 200 yds in advance. Find the biggest gust you can to jibe in even if it means going much earlier or later than where you might be thinking of turning.

3 - Fully powered jibes - easy to jibe in the biggest puffs. Just sheet in hard for a second and carve off the wind. Make a big arc and don't be in a rush. Exit still off the wind. I didn't wear a GPS yesterday but last week in similar conditions, I was going into carves at 20 and they were super easy. Don't be afraid of jibing in the gusts (unless you are seriously overpowered).

One time, I pulled off enough jibes straight, I was reminded of this and tried to shout it to Stephen

Good info, thanks for sharing. I had a blast out there, and yes, I heard you yell that and it made me laugh.

Early shift at VP. Went out on 5.4, fully powered. Winds faded and slogged all the way home as I needed to be back in Atlanta. As I was designing, white caps reappeared in the channel.
