Sunday 10/17

May be some wind today, not as much as yesterday. If it blows, i hope to go to Old Federal, but may go to Van Pugh.

How was it? Trees were moving around at my house today. I am ready to go for next session.

Re: Sunday 10/17

Turned out OK. William, Hamdi and I windfoiled and Dimitri finned. Started out on the big stuff (which felt real big after yesterday's 4,5,) then it came up after William left.* Rigged down to 6.0 + and it was still blowing when we left. I'm tired.

Gene

* I had to say that.

Re: Sunday 10/17

I went on the water an hour before Gene did.
And I have to say ‘when Gene got on the water, at first nothing happened!’ - which was a very good thing because things were going great.
Then it started to blow even harder and, as Gene wrote, we both rigged smaller. Ok, small detail - I blew a huge hole in my 7.6 sail and had to rig down but it was time to rig down anyways.
All in all, aside from the 7.6 needing professional repair or be retired (not that I have sail envy with the shiny 8.0 or 8.1’s we are seeing at the lake ), I thought it was a great day. Sat was good, for me Sun even better.
Yeah, I am also tempted to say ‘after William left…’, but, knowing he had awesome family plans, just doesn’t give the same satisfaction as one might expect ?.

Glad I left. I would have gotten my butt kicked royally on my ++fuse. Glad you guys stuck it out and got wind.

Hamdi, sorry about the sail. Time for a FoilGlide? Biggrin

I have to admit that I have visited the NB site and took a peak. 8.0 is out of stock, 9.0 would require a new mast and a boom. I don’t even have a 490 for the 8.0.
Ezzy 8.1 hydra takes 460 mast and boom in range of mine…
Plenty of drive time coming to mull it over ?

Sounds like you were looking at the HyperGlide, not the FG

FG: https://www.nbwindsurfing.com/shop/Foiling/Windsurf-Foiling/Wind-Foil-Sails/p/Severne-Foil-Glide-2-2021-x51975118.htm
The 8 rigs on a 460 rdm 494x207

If you want an HG, I'll sell you my HG2 cheap (not my new HGO) but, as much as I love the sail, I really don't think it's what you were wanting.

Looks like it. I don’t know all the pros and cons (various Severne and Ezzy sails) and likely won’t tell the difference at my level but, thought was, if I will upgrade, I really should upgrade and not go halfway (not that money is burning a hole in my pocket).
Is there a crash course available - I wish I could research more but, between work, a new class starting this week and the Quebec trip, I am limited on time (unless there’s a podcast or ebook on them for the long drive North ?)?

Probably worth a phone call to a retailer you trust and then respect their judgement. Different sails have different feels, for sure. It depends what you expect out of the sail, the kind of feel you prefer and the match to your sailing style. For a big sail, I love the locked in feeling of cams; and the stability, range, amazing glide and acceleration a big luff sleeve and flat profile give. For that I'm absolutely willing to overlook rigging the 4 cams, the luff sleeve that drinks water like a camel, etc. It would drive (most) other people absolutely mad. The FG is detuned a bit - softer, more low end power, lighter, easier, not as much range and stability. My own speculation: the FG and Ezzy are probably more alike than either are to the HG. Admittedly, this is all from what I've read or heard as I've no direct experience with either. The FG is closer to my Gaastra AirRide, however, and I like that kind of sail - it's in the "repair shop" at the moment, too. If you haven't sorted out the sail issue by your return, you can try that. However, the 21s didn't have cams.

I wish we had more options in the US, however, as there are lots of good freeride sails that have limited or no distribution here. XO, Loft, Gun, NP V8s to name a few.

One option for bigger guys is the Sailworks Flyer FR. I'd think the 8.5 is suitable for a lot of us. I briefly considered it but already had the mast for the HGO. And, of course, like Langdon and Dave DeLozier have, the regular Flyer 8.2 although it takes an SDM.

Re: Sunday 10/17

Thank you William; great info as usual.
The sensible approach -not that I have a reputation to follow sensibility- would be to try to get my 7.6 repaired and postpone a reset of my quiver till I can tell a good sail from a bad one or develop a preference for a style. Not to mention stop putting holes in sails. Maybe one day…

At the risk of highlighting how bad I am at this sport, I will admit that I have used that tape MANY times. This rip however is too big even for the gorilla tape - the bottom
Panel (unsuccessfully) tried to slow down my face down crash , leading to a pretty ugly L shaped rip that definitely requires a professional repair.
It was a nice attempt at a jibe up until then though ?
