I finally got to go windsurfing yesterday. Yeah, really. So excuse me if I'm a little over-exuberant today.
t was a great day at Station 29, Sullivans Island,Charleston yesterday. Got in water at 12:15 and out at 7:15 with maybe 45 minutes of break time spread out in there. Hands are blistered and got various bangs and bruises - feels great! All was on 5.8 w/ wave board. Plenty of power -- sometimes way too much. Lot's of good air on the outside NE logo-high waves with mostly spectacular wipeouts. But no blood, which was a good thing, 'cause my sailing buddy, Johnathan Coleman, had a certain sighting of a white-tip shark about 10 feet in front of him just as he stated a jibe . I was just behind him, way on the outside, when he freaked in mid-jibe and abandoned the turn and went further out. I was also following his track for safety -- we were WAY out there in some big crazy waves. Anyway, I had started my jibe to follow him and just barely stayed up when I jerked out of the turn to stay with him. I followed him all the way in back to the beach, not knowing what was up. He was shook. Said it was such a clear sighting and it was coming right at his board like it had a definte purpose. We waited about 10 minutes and went back out to the outside. I mean, what you gonna do? About 45 minutes later, just to the side of me about 20 feet away a huge leopard stingray jumps about 5 feet out of the water. I swear, the thing looked the size of a Starboard GO, the smaller 140 anyway. Shocked me at first but it was a very beautiful thing. That's ocean sailing for you.
