Shaped (as in Skis) Boards

via Phil's Windsurf Blog - a new French brand MB Boards is taking on a different approach to board design. Think shaped as in shaped snow skis that transformed that sport

Re: Shaped (as in Skis) Boards

One thing we have learned by now - just about any shape will work and most everything has been tried. So I'm inclined to think this is merely a gimmick for marketing purposes. I suppose the wider shape in front (gee - that seems so modern - kind of like the boards that were around before the "no nose" era) could help in subplaning or tacking (but I'm not sure that boards of this volume are doing a lot of either.) Freestyle would seem to be plausible reason for a shape like this.

Anyway, I could be dead wrong and if so, I'd expect to see a lot of the other brands going this route before long. In fairness to these guys - it is usually the things you don't see (or are able to notice) like rocker lines, construction materials and methods that make much of the difference and these boards may be quite innovative in that regard. So good luck to them, but I'm probably waiting until Webdiety gets one.

Well, the board doesn't seem to be holding Balz Müller back any (he's got his trademark white helmet). I think his brother (neoprene hoodie) is on one, too.

I'm not sure who's who but this guy seems to be on a conventional shaped board. Anyway, if my board had those winds and that rider it could probably be really impressive. If I had his board, and our winds I would suck like always. Probably worse.
