Sailing the Weekend

I'm new to Atlanta and looking to get some sailing in on Saturday. I've got my big board and sail to deal with summer winds but looking for info on the best spot for the weekend given the forecast of westerlys.

Van Pugh park is where 90% of the sailing in Atlanta takes place.

If it's really windy and NW, Van Pugh is the best place (although some sissy-boys will go to Galts Ferry at Allatoona Lake to avoid the big scary waves). If it goes south of west at all, there's a pesky wind shadow at the VP launch. That's not a big deal on less-than-honkin' days since you just schlog out to the wind on a big board anyway. That part of the lake is by far the most open with the longest fetch in many wind directions. Boat wakes will begin to be an issue this time of year.

Old Federal is a really nice place and good in SW with not a lot of boat traffic, but it can get mucho crowded on nice weekends– get there early.

Lake Lanier Sailing Club is also good for SW with a pretty long fetch and not much motor boat traffic. LLSC is mucho anti-crowded as access is limited to members and guests. Coincidentally, I am one of those things. You can be other tomorrow if you like, as I am plotting to go there and windsurf– with a Hobie option (assuming the f'cast holds). Call me for the gate code if you want to go there (anybody else too). For directions, the link above will get you there.

Some forecast show some wind today. If so, I'll probably sail at Van Pugh or maybe try to join Chris V at the Sailing Club. If the kiters are at Old Federal, I might try to kite there.

Kahuna - Welcome to Atlanta, the Southeast Windsurfing meca, not. We do have a good group of windsurfers and a local shop, WindSense Windsurfing. If I can be of any help, info or gear, give me a call.

Randy is at Old Fed, not much wind YET. I'm going to join him shortly.
