Safety Warning for Lanier and Hooch.

This time for real. Not sure if windsports are included, but it is only an advisory or warning

Great. I've been getting sinus flushes trying to jibe my foil. I'm a goner aren't I? Help
btw, full summer pool is 1071. At this rate, I'll be able to foil from the parking lot.

Edit: USACE is updating stuff on their fleecebook page: https://www.facebook.com/LakeSidneyLanierUSACE/

Edit edit: Water levels here https://waterdata.usgs.gov/ga/nwis/uv/?site_no=02334400&PARAmeter_cd=00065,00060,00062

Re: Safety Warning for Lanier and Hooch.

Reading the advisory carefully, I'm not seeing anything that specifically says boating Lake Lanier is unsafe not advised. I'm thinking it is the river they were talking about which makes more sense due to the current and bacteria level (apparently produced from our source of drinking water Bad ). So it might be ok. I recall times in the past when the lake was too high and we sailed in it. I do recall Galts being closed because the parking lot was flooded though.

Wonder about Toona as well - it can rise a lot faster than Lanier.

In end, because Windsport is not boating or swimming (most of the time) - well you know where I'm going with this......

The worst, most deceptive headline writing I can imagine. The article is not much better, obviously written by somebody unfamiliar with boating. The most important hazard to consider imho is newly floating debris.

I recall in the past, advisory warning due to lots of rain causing STUFF to wash down from land into the lake. Result was swim beaches like OF were closed. All kinds of stuff runs off the land in a big rain. Fertilizer, cow poop, dog poop, opioids.

Hobie Cats are about to float away.

Anybody want to buy a lake front house? Real cheap.

There is fish poop in the lake all the time. Nobody worries about that. Not to mention those stupid geese.

I agree the article was unclear. If you want clarification, Ms Amanda Coyne's email address is

amanda.coyne@coxinc.com

EDIT -

Per Ms Coyne:

I appreciate your concern and I want to ensure my story is clear. I’ve added the following to the story to make clear that the bacteria and flow speed concerns are in regards to the river, and the concerns regarding the lake are underwater obstructions:

“The hazards are concentrated on the river, but the warning applies to both the river and the lake, according to the Army Corps. The main concern on the lake is underwater obstructions.”

I did verify yesterday with the Army Corps that the warning applied to both bodies of water.

Yeah....I am going sailing tomorrow evening, probably at Old Fed.

Maybe less boats

High water equals more boats

Forecast out a week (GFS):

I hope the Corps keeps the drain open. Otherwise, Peelskid will be able to windsurf from his driveway.

I don't get the underwater obstructions part. I could see a speedboat hitting floating debris would be a problem, but why would there be underwater obstructions? Seems like they would be even more underwater. Anyway, I might stick to Toona because they don't seem to have the problem of too much water. Must be an issue of where the rain fell. Of course, no matter what, Acworth is on its own dam so I think its level stays fairly constant.

Be careful out there. I've often seen a "stick" floating on the surface, but it had a big ass branch attached to it. I cringe to think of the possibilities.

FTFY: I cringe at the memory. I didn't even see a stick. It was floating a foot under water.

I try to avoid Barrett when he's on the shore to prevent his recording such episodes as this. Biggrin

Another update from Ms Coyne:

I wanted to let you know I was given inaccurate information by the Army Corps about the lake being “unsafe.” There is no threat to boaters and swimmers and a correction is being issued now.

Since i don't have a cat video to share, I think I'll go back to organizing my socks.

Even better, a cat on the way to organizing his socks. Assuming he doesn't hit any submerged branches on the way. Shok

Re: Safety Warning for Lanier and Hooch.

See - I told ya so. No danger in the lake whatsoever, except of course the usual hazards: geese poop bacteria, drunk motor boaters, sail boat captains who think they own the lake, annoying people asking windsurfers "Is that hard?", fisherman who fling lines with hooks on them all over the place, a-holes who tailgate on 400 when I'm heading up to the lake, cops who give me a slow driver ticket for driving the speed limit in front of tailgaters, people taking over our parks for for church services because they are too cheap to go to a real church with a building and stuff like that, sunburn on my neck and nose, thieves trying to steal another one of my windsurf boards, drowning, hypothermia, heat exhaustion, dehydration and all the other usual suspects. So have fun.

Helen got 7 inches of water today. Expect Lanier to go up some more.
