Report on Van Pugh 3-1, Anyone go to Vann's Tavern?

Today (Mon., March 1st) was the first warm windsurfing day of the year. With full sun and a high of at least 70F, it was great to be out on the water. I launched from the cove to the right of the parking area, facing the lake. Wind from the SE was blowing down this cove. The normal launching spot in front of the parking area was in a wind shadow and dead calm. The wind cycled up and down from about 18 mph for a couple of minutes and then 8 mph for a couple minutes.

Did anyone go to Vann's Tavern? If so, was the wind steadier on the north side of the Lake?

Tim Carter and I went to Tidwell. It was actually pretty strong in bursts of say 15-20 minutes or so, then would drop down to quite a bit. During the gusty periods there were plenty of whitecaps. I rigged my 5.8 and it was more than big enough in some of the gusts, but not the lulls. However, I should have rigged my 7.2. Pretty gusty and some holes here and there, but when it was on, it was pretty nice. Esp since it was nice and sunny and warm.

I left a little before 5. Tim had also derigged, but the wind came up pretty strong at that time. When I left, Tim was trying to decide if he should rerig or go home. Looked pretty good at the time.

Sounds like Tidwell was better with the SE wind. At Van Pugh I rigged an 8.3. It was a lot to handle when the wind was on, but the right choice in the lulls.
